Hello all
Just bought an 06 F-350 Super Duty and I have a question. Most likely a stupid question but I'm full of those. Why would this truck have locks on the front tires if I have a switch on the dash for 4 hi and 4 low? What's the purpose of the locks? My F-150 had only the switch for 4 wheel.
You have "auto" hubs, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. When they work, you have the ability to switch to 4x4 sitting in the truck and not have to get out to lock in the hubs. When 4x4 isn't engaged, they act as free spinning hubs. If you know you are going in nasty stuff, you can manually lock the hubs in and go into 4x4 without waiting for the hubs to lock in. IIRC, the auto hub feature uses vacuum lines to engage the 4x4 system.
The previous posts filled you in on the reason. I'll add that the hub **** should be turned on a somewhat regular basis because the housing likes to corrode and seize the **** will seize and not be able to turn in the groove. A thin lubricant/anti rust spray that doesn't attract excess dirt is best. Once the groove corrodes you need to buy new hubs which are $200 each at minimum for the auto hubs.

I was going to post this same question..what i still dont understand is if i manually lock the hubs am in 4 wheel drive or do i still have to go inside the truck and also put it into 4 wheel with the dash control.

If you look closely at the hubs, you will notice that they say AUTO and LOCK. There is no UNLOCK position. Knowing that pretty much clarifies how they work.
Some useful info there, but noteworthy that the '05 and up hubs are redesigned and do not look like those on the Guzzle page. The newer ones are less prone to failure as well.

You are not in 4WD until you turn the **** on the dash. Until you do that the transfer case is still disengaged.
