ok so i tryed starting it with the coil unattached it doesnt stay cranking when keys realeased only when truck fires does it stay cranking so i guess i was wrong about ignition switch but my starter doesnt have a solenoid unless its built into it ? im so stuck ahahahah
I have a great picture of that starter but the upload link isn't working right now. Anyway, yes it does have a solenoid, they all do. Notice the big lump on the side of the starter motor ? That's the cover for some of the solenoid mechanics, it should have one screw at the back of that cover.
This is what happens (assuming you only have just the battery cable connection). When the relay on the fender energizes, it sends battery current and voltage to the starter solenoid (inside of the starter). The first thing that happens is an electromagnet pulls on an armature that pushes the gear forward to engage with the teeth on the flywheel. Near the end of it's travel, that armature hits a pair of internal elecrical contacts that send current to the motor part of the starter to make it spin. Your gonna have to remove the starter to fix or replace it anyway so when you have it off.....take that screw off the cover and slide it back and off. You'll see a lever looking thing that usually pivots on a roll pin. Play around with that, push down on the rearward side of that lever and you'll notice the starter gear move forward. Sometimes, especially when they get really old and used....that lever and fulcrum (the pivot point) can bind up in the forward (teeth engaged with the flywheel teeth) position.
just use a set of jumper cables. connect them to a good battery and then take the ground cable and clamp it to one of the ears of the starter (like where the bolts go). Take the second one, the red cable and touch it to the terminal at the back of the starter. Doing that with make the starter solenoid engage and the motor turn ***CAUTION** hang on to that sucker when you do that, it'll wat to 'jump' a bit. Also you can do that with that cover I was talking about off. That way if it is binding up, it'll be pretty obvious to ya. Mike

FWIW, you need to create a garage (look beneath your name in a post and click the link) and you can upload pics. I hear tell the galleries will still be visible but cannot be updated with any new pics.
alright guys shes running again and it was the relay god damn things ! got her runnin and about 10 minutes down the road blew the belt off of it due to a seized tensioner pulley hahaha but its all going good now thanks for all of your help i really appreciate it and i'll get some pics of her up soon
Good to hear Kyle, was it the starter relay on the inner fender or the soilenoid in the starter? Kinda curious. Good on ya though, glad to hear ur movin' again.

Definitely worth mentioning is also AB (Abandoned Bronco), sorry AB, senior moment (I'm 53). He's another one you want to listen too. Seems like another pretty sharp guy too !

Do I use the galleries or user CP? Like yesterday....I was gonna send Kyle a pic of his starter and it ended u[ as a broken link in my photo album. What (and how) is the best way to just send a quick pic to someone in a reply in a thread. Not got this thing quite figured out yet. Thanks. Mike
