I need to buy another truck. My 2007 F-250 was stolen yesterday. I pull a 24' fifth wheel travel trailer and the 6.0L has been just fine.
I've heard that the newer diesel engines get poor milage and are prone to problems. Is this true? Do I want to stick with 2007 or a little older or should I go ahead and get a newer truck?

Not according to the mileage poll. The avg in town mileage for the 6.7 looks to be around 15-16.
It's also probably well known by now that I HATE my 6.7. The 400/800 flash rendered it toilet ready. To the OP the 6.7 is Ford's first attempt at designing an engine in house. I would wait a few years on the 6.7 so that they can hash out what are going to be a laundry list of problems. If I had it to do again I would have bought the Chevy truck instead.
As promised, I have now calculated some "real life" fuel numbers comparing my old 2008 to my new 2011. These have been calculated over about 700 miles of driving the new truck (which I love by the way). These are very accurate in terms of the exact same routes and towing loads.
Around town - 2008: 13.2 mpg 2011: 16.9 Improvement: 28.0%
Both of the trucks were equipped very much the same, including the axle ratio, and I think represents a good comparison. For the towing, this is a gooseneck trailer with a total weight being towed of approximately 10,000 pounds. Both sets of numbers were calculated over routes that I routinely drive.
The 2011 is much quieter also and tows a big trailer effortlessly. The difference in mpg is significant, especially if you put a lot of miles on the truck each year. I would hope the mpg would get a little better still as the engine gets broken in.
Very few people understand how much of a fuel penalty operating a diesel in very cold climates (and before it warms up) extract.
With the DOC/SCR/DPF, this penalty is increased by the need to bring the entire emissions system up to "warm" and keep it there to keep emissions low.
Plus, many people use things like heated seats to keep their rear toasted, defoggers, fans on max, interior heating, and electronic gadgets.
None of this stuff runs on air.
Add up the electrical load, work backwards to amount of fuel needed to generate that power --- and then adjust that from the mileage you see.
Even your interior heating is not free --- as when it gets cold enough, extra fuel has to be burned to keep you toasty.
When all adjustments are done, then factor in that you are moving 3-4 tons around (depending on your config, actual load, etc.).
Do the net (actual) highway weight adjustment, and they are roughly comparable.
The huge improvement from the 6.4 to the 6.7 is from reducing the penalties extracted by the emissions system and a big improvement in combustion efficiency via the more sophisticated fuel injection system and a better combustion chamber design, plus a little bit of this, a bit of that, and so on.
PS We know there is at least one thief out there that know how to steal quality.

Your answer to the question in the thread title is simple. Cummins 5.9 I6 best mileage, best reliability, highest torqe (for the years it was made). They just wrapped it in a turd!

Do they get it a new VIN, etc. and then just use it?
BTW, you are doing what I kinda predicted at New Years, that the value of used 6.0s, especially late production years, are going to sharply rise until they match the value of 6.4s after correcting for the extra year of depreciation.
The 2007 or earlier ones are the last diesel you can buy with a relatively simple emission system with no DPF, etc. and relatively cheap to maintain, with a B50 life of 350,000 miles.

I'm not sure of everything that goes on in Mexico. I know that the whole issue or titles and registration is a little fuzzy. I believe it must have a lot to do with the drug trade or human smuggling since that's Mexico's main export these days. I know that the Higher end SUV's go farther down into Central America.

Your stateing that there is not a cummins 5.9 I6 available in a new truck since 1998? And that the last year it was sold with a new truck wasn't 2006? Just curious......and I can't fathom why you compared a modern diesel engine to a steam engine. Also in 2006 that cummins you implyed didn't exsist was putting out 325hp and 610rwt. But your right the steam engine is a better bet.
