2011 vs. 2008 mpg - some real #'s

As promised, I have now calculated some "real life" fuel numbers comparing my old 2008 to my new 2011. These have been calculated over about 700 miles of driving the new truck (which I love by the way). These are very accurate in terms of the exact same routes and towing loads.

Around town - 2008: 13.2 mpg 2011: 16.9 Improvement: 28.0%
Towing - 2008: 11.2 mpg 2011: 13.3 Improvement: 18.6%

Both of the trucks were equipped very much the same, including the axle ratio, and I think represents a good comparison. For the towing, this is a gooseneck trailer with a total weight being towed of approximately 10,000 pounds. Both sets of numbers were calculated over routes that I routinely drive.

The 2011 is much quieter also and tows a big trailer effortlessly. The difference in mpg is significant, especially if you put a lot of miles on the truck each year. I would hope the mpg would get a little better still as the engine gets broken in.

I've noticed after 11,000 miles my truck is night and day in the MPG area than when I got the truck new. It's like something just "kicked" in...weird, It has increased to a better 3 mpg in city and 6mpg better on highway.

F250 King Ranch, SRW, 3.73 axle, 4wd FX-4 package. Exactly the same set up as my old 2008. I am satisfied with the new numbers, especially around town. I had heard a bunch of really high towing #'s that I knew had to be BS. I tow a lot hauling cattle and if I can get 13 that is pretty darn good.

Our percentages are pretty close. What are you pulling to have such low numbers?

Are you guys figures from the screen or hand figured. Or are the mpg's about the same no matter which method used?

I have calculated it both ways and it always comes out within a tenth of an mpg over a reasonable number of miles. Now, I pretty much use the gauge.

I just use the gauge now, hand calc is very close to it.

Unloaded, I can drive for 70 miles or more and average 19-21 as long as I am not on an interstate. Going 70 lowers it to 17 or so, 62 mph nets in the 20mpg range if you do it for more than 30 minutes.

Towing 8 to 10K trailer, usually in the 12's for mpg which is going 70mph for extended periods of time.

My '08 I had (6.4) would range in the 9's towing and maybe 15 unloaded for extended runs.

Your numbers are right on track. I have almost 35K on my '11 and it is starting to become a little louder so I think it is loosening up a bit. I also got a new air filter (seems to make a difference after 34K on the original) and get this, the '08-'10 6.4 air filters were around $80, the '11 6.7 air filters are $10! Bonus!!!

Sweet truck Charles. Sounds like the mileage I get with my 2003 7.3 only with tons more power. I also pull a 24 ft gooseneck livestock trailer with mine. Sounds like she would handle that with ease. I have always have said the superduty is the best tow rig around. Enjoy your truck it should serve you well

I did a nine-hour drive yesterday, averaging 115 km/hr or just a shade less than 72 mph. Got 17.6 MPG for the trip. This is with a 3.55 axle, temperatures were -5*C.

If you have a SRW truck and the 6.7 diesel, you have a 3.31 or 3.55 axle ratio. 6.2 gas and diesel dually's get a 3.73. If you have 20 inch wheels, 3.55 only. 17 and 18 inch wheels get either the 3.31 or 3.55 ratios. Factory installation assumed.

Sounds like most of you guys are about same on mpg. I was just trying to get an idea if the screen figures were even half way close. I never found them close on my 04. Also with my chassis cab I had no idea to expect same better or worse than you pickup guys. I did kick mine up to 70 a few times and noticed the boost gauge go up a little. Of course I guess I have different turbo. Now that I've goofed in the garage awhile I have an idea what the screen shows, really neat.
