So if it is the starter, can someone educate me as to why the starter functions fine when the engine is cold, but when the engine is hot is struggles to cranK?

I'm gonna guess just heat & wear, from nothing specific other than it's a wear item.

I have long tube headers that are purt dang close to the starter motor, in fact I had to use
some ballpeen action on 'em to make for what little clearance there is.

I don't have any starter problems, at least not yet (and it's been this way for 2,5 years now).

Back in the 6 volt days starters were notorious for dragging the armature on the field when hot. (Yes, I'm that old.) We were pulling twice as much current to start with, which caused more heat, and it was normal for a starter to drag when hot so there were starter rebuilding places in essentially every town.

As for why when hot, both the armature and the field expand when hot and the clearance was next to nothing to begin with. A bit of wear in the bearing allows the clearance to close and drag happens. That causes heat, which causes expansion, which causes drag, which causes heat, .......

Or heat from the bellhousing or engine block.

Heat from any of these sources should not affect a new or good working starter system.

Only when the starter starts to wear out, or battery cables get old, or grounds get dirty, or aftermarket exaust systems installed too close to the starter, etc... does heat become a problem.

I still recommend to have the starter tested.
