i have a 84 f150 4x4 with a 4.9l in it. i have put two soleoid on it and will not keep a charge on the battery overnight. yesterday wen i charged the battery up to full and try to start it the solenoid clicked a couple of times and and the cable runnin from the solenoid to the starter got hot and started smoking and i lost all electric power. i changed the cables from the solenoid to the starter, the cable to the battery to the solenoid and the cable from neg size of battery to the engine block today. with no help to the problem. a couple of days before this when i was jumping it to get it started when i turrned the key the solenoid starting clicking so i shut the key off to let battery charge more and it still kept doing it like i was still turning the key so i pulled the jumper cables off and they were hot to touch and yes i had them hooked up right. could this be a short somewhere or do i need to replace solenoid again or wat. something is wrong where it burning solenoids up and not keeeping acharge overnight. the battery is good and the alternator is too . where do i go from here guys. need some help bad. i am lost lol .
also while going through some of the wiring i noticed the divert solenoid is broken in 2 pieces. wat does this do and could this be the problem and where do i get autozone says they dont carry it lol
make sure you got the solenoid hooked up right and has a good ground on the fender wall. the ignition switch wire i believe should be hooked up to the I terminal. ( the smaller terminal of the two closest to the battery when mounted on the fender.)
i couldnt tell by looking but i replaced them and now i have electric again. but when i turn the key solenoid clicks once then the ground cables get hot the one on the motor block will smoke. i can hear the starter clicking but wont turn over. i am going to take starter off tomorrow and check it out. hope that is it and no more probs. does anybody have any ideas lol
99 IF you are seeing smoke where the cable connects to the engine block, that is usually an indication that you have a bad connection there, like either it is loose or oil or rust or something stopping the connection. Your starter takes tremendous juice and MUST have a very good connection.
