i have a 1974 f100 with a 302 in it.and today my altenater went out so i replaced it and when i hooked the batt back up the cylenoid started smoking.so i replaced that and the ignition controll module (brain)and nothing will happen like from inside the truck u get nothing and if you jumpe the starter it turns over but you get no fire..please help..thank you
Check the fusible link in the wiring harness.
On the battery terminal side of the solenoid there are a couple of small wires hooked to the terminal. One of these is a fusible link, it should have a small plastic tab that says "fusible link 16 ga".
A quick check is to grasp the wire and tug it, if it feels soft or gives, its bad and needs to be replaced.
No, the fusible link is just that, inline overload protection. It doesn't have any effect on charge rate.
Most likely cause of overcharging is bad voltage regulator. Second would be a bad battery.
