almost all big rigs these days have an APU mounted to the frame to provide electricity instead of running the engine. typical APU is around 5,000 watts, and uses less than 1/4 gallon of diesel per hour compared to about 1 gallon per hour running the engine.

Very true, found most often in the OTR rigs---these have been an absolute great idea for big trucks not only in fuel savings but reduced wear and tear on the uber-expensive main engines too.
