I posted a while back about my engine having a hiccup. Well, that went away on its own. Now i have a new problem.
I have a pretty bad miss, mostly when cold, but intermittent when it warms up. I put 7 new plug wires on it (couldn't get #8 off, who came up with the arrangement?!) and pulled the exhaust side plugs, they were new.
The CEL works, but never lights up while its missing. I thought it could just be the cracked manifold sounding like a miss, but with the vibrations it gets, i know a cylinder isn't firing...
What are some things i can check? Are fuel injectors a wear item? That might explain my poor fuel mileage...
Have you tried a compression test to see if in spec? Tried using a hand sprayer and hitting wires and check at night to see if detect any igniton misfires to ground? Have you run it by Advance/Autozone to have it scanned free for stored codes?
Gah... why didn't i think about getting codes pulled? I've been looking at readers, but they are so darn expensive... never even thought about the parts store...
I did play with all 8 wires while it was running and it didn't create a miss (it wasn't missing at the time).
Can i just do a compression test from the exhaust side?
I have 2.3 duratech 16 valve with the four plug arrangement. Am not sure of the exact specs or compression testing procedure for your eight plug arrangement but assume it would be same a four plug version. Check auto repair databases online at your local library (Mitchels on Demand or Alldata). If they don't have might have information in their car repair manuals. Otherwise maybe somebody on this forum can chime in. No guarantee you will have any stored codes but figured it's worth checking.
On a semi related note, would it be better to drop in a junk yard engine with 130K for $500 or rebuild my 215k engine? Keeping in mind i dont have any of the specialty tools...
on that junk yard engine who knows what condition its in ! your engine could be in better shape even with more miles on it ! that junk yarder could have a cracked head or rod knocking or mileage could be double what they say !
Try attaching a vacuum gage to help diagnose your ignition miss.
A bad fuel injector will also produce a miss-fire.
Have had the same problem with a miss at idle. added a bottle of Amsoil P.I. a gasoline additive concentrate and within 150 miles it cleared up the miss at idle.. a cheap $10 fix for me..
I cheated, took it to friends shop and he put it on his scope. The #1 Injector would fire at random, was just lucky it was doing it when he hooked it up to the scope.

You should be able to do a compression test for either side but a leak-down test would be more conclusive. I am inclined to think more fuel or ignition.
Coil pack?
Off topic but here in California the parts store can no longer read codes (as of 2011), apparently the auto shop lobby put up a fuss.
