Rear axle movement

Here is a question from my father, about his 2004 Ranger 4x4 4.0l, 170k:

There is play in rear axles. On a lift, if you grab the top of the tire and rock back and forth you get movement. Maybe .25" The dealer replaced the seals and said the bearings were fine (measured with a tool) and the play was normal for Rangers.

"Rolling" play is normal.
"In & out" play is normal.
Up and down or tipping movement is not normal.

Unfortunately, the right axle on my 88 Ranger has so much up and down play that the seal can no longer do its job. I'm not sure whether it's the axle shaft, bearing, or a combination of the two. It doesn't make any abnormal noises. I had the axle out of it last week and it did show some wear, but I can't find any specs on it other than overall length.

its going to be the bearing ! the axle bearings do not wear on the axle , they have a inside race that the axle shaft goes through and a outside one that sets in the housing tube and ball bearings in between !

I just had the rear apart last weekend. The bearing that is out by the wheel has no inner race. It rides directly on the axle. There did appear to be some wear on the axle.

I service about 50+ rangers and most of them have service bodies on them. I have seen this issue alot in the last 6 years here. If the axle shaft has a groove in it where it rides on the roller bearings then it is better to re-assemble that side with a repair bearing. Repair bearings are made just for this problem. They move the bearing location to a different place on the axle thus eliminating the need of replacing the axle shaft. Any parts store should have this in stock. I think they are around $22-$29 at advance around here. If you are going to wait till later than I'm sure you can find them cheaper.
