I am thinking about cutting out both Cats on my old 300. We live in a non-emissions state so I'm thinking about putting a strait pipe in where the cats are now. Is there a better way to think about this? Has anyone else done this and had good success?
Even if your state considers the truck exempt from an emissions test it still might be required to have the factory smog stuff intact. My state is like that but enforcement isn't tight on some stuff like air pumps or EGR. They always check for the cats being there.
Removing a working cat won't increase your power or gas mileage by much, if at all, but it will change the tone of your exhaust.

well when my dad got me my dual exhaust for my 86 f150 they took the cats off with out telling my dad but we dont have emission test anymore for 95 and older vehicles.... but when i took it for a spin i did feel a difference i felt like my truck had more pep too it...
I lived in SC for a while but I don't remember the laws there. Here in GA I just got my truck inspected and registered. If the vehicle is 25years old or older you do not have to have the equipment. The State understands that after 25 years the parts may not be available any more. Also, some counties like mine don't check emissions at all. I have found that a county or state police officer to be the best source for correct information.
I agree with others. Unless your Cat is plugged up you won't feel any real difference. Gas mileage might go up 1mpg. You will hear a sound change. If you still have all your smog stuff installed the O2 sensor reading will change without the Cat. It might effect how your engine runs. I can't say for sure because I rebuilt my 300 and remove everything.

Not in an '86. The O2 sensor is in front of the CAT. I still would not remove it if functioning correctly. Even if it's not, newer 3-way hiflow CAT's are available for about the same price as a good muffler. Switching from the older dual CAT's to a single 3-way is the way to go.

Agreed. I took off my old cat and put on a new 3-way and the performance boost was impressive.
Its a factory exhaust system so I think it's a 2" pipe. I looked through the local autoparts last night and found a few for under $70 so that should work.
