Cut off the Cat

Seen a few posts lately about Cats.
And I got Curious.

My 1992 F150 5.0 4x4 was neutered by a local muffler shop.
The cat was trash, and they gave me the option of replacing it, or running with out it.
I opted for no cat.
I am 100% positive that they made no further adjustments, they simply got rid of the cat.

Should I be doing something to compensate for not having a cat?

TIA

bad move emission just went out of sight lucky your not in emission county, i think it is against the law for them to remove the cat, you probley hurt your gas milage as the o2s will not work proper

How would it affect the O2s if the only one is before the catalytic converter?

i think i read somewhere that it needs the backpressure for the o2 to work properly and also to maintain heat on o2

i think i read somewhere that it isn't going to effect your o2 sensor at all. i think i read somewhere also that you don't actually want backpressure in your exhaust. the only thing that no cats is gonna mess with is you emissions test if applicable. as far as compinsating for the cats...there shouldn't be that big of a change that your ecu can't adjust for. have fun wiht your cat-less truck blackant.

As long as your truck is 95 or older ie pre 96 then it is fine. If you have California emissions this might be different. Basically if there is only one O2 before the cats then it is fine. If there is an O2 after the cats, it won't work properly without them. EEC-IV or OBD-I is ok but OBD-II will not like this. There are a lot of 5.0 Mustang, Camero, Firebird, etc guys that remove them for street/strip or just strip use. Most likely your truck will run better with out the cat(s).

Thanks for all of your input.
The truck runs great, and since the operation has a very cool growl.

Removing the cat may or may not be illegal in your state/county, however it is against FEDERAL law in the USA. You don't want to know the fine, or the imprisonment term either, not that it's enforced on a federal level at all. But the consequences are steep and on the books.

Personally, I'd replace the cat, only because if everyone removed it our landscape would smell like NYC or LA. It doesn't hurt anything to have it, except your wallet every 8-10 years.

Not having a cat doesn't effect your EFI system at all, because the O2 sensor is before the cat anyway (in your case, some of the newer trucks have two 02 sensors, one before, one after the cat, and in that case you must have it for it to work properly and not spit codes).

how true if i had of been keeping my truck i would of bought a new cat. if my f250 had of had a 300 six in it i dont think it would of even come with a cat but i could be mistaken.also performance cats are sold now.

I think mine is somewhat plugged up too. I would like to cut it off but I am worried about the legal consequences.

Everybody grab a hacksaw, a couple beers, and cut off those cat's. Then put on a straight pipe and maybe a glass pack and let'er beller. V8's were made to roar. But don't mind me i'm a redneck!!

My cat is just about done....can I put 2 cats on my 95 5 litre for a real dual exhaust setup or do they still require the H pipe setup for some reason?

I cut mine off of the '90 F-150 w/351w a couple years ago and it ran much better after... currently has a 18" glasspack on it and a exhaust cut-out. Sounds great and is running the best it ever has.
