The TTB Thread

Last update: 01/17/12

Like a lot of guys, my '84 is still running a TTB setup. I've searched and read till my head was spinning and this is some of the info I gathered. Some of the info is repeated within other threads, but it's all worth reading. Some links pertain to Rangers and BII's, but the meat of the info still applies to our full size rigs. This is good reading for those wishing to understand and tweak their TTB setups. So without further ado, here are my links.

Personally I don't understand the hate. Although, I've never driven it other than off the truck and into the work area but I suspect it will be dang strong for what I'll and most people need to do.

Yeah, I've never gotten the TTB hate either. Most guys answer TTB questions by answering SAS. Not everyone wants to swap in a solid axle and not everyone needs a solid axle.

The 4th video is awesome, looks cool watching a TTB working.

I sure don't hate my TTB D44 HD under my Diesel truck, it's got 377k miles on it, and never had a problem with it. Sure did go through alot of Ball joints though.

Some chevy guys pay big bucks to swap in TIB setup on their 2wd pre runners.

I agree, not everyone needs a D60. I want them simply bc I like big tires...like too big for a D44. Also, I believe a D44 is a D44, regardless of how many u-joints it has. I think a TTB/TIB is the ultimate "low buck" go fast "axle". They certainly take some abuse at the rough truck comps I've seen. It's the setup to beat!

Increased wear results from owner failure or not keeping it aligned (right) and now buying the right parts with a lift.

Thanks for all the reps guys! I just hope folks are able to get some good info out of it. I just want folks to know there are ways to make their TTB system work for them.

Agreed on your D44 point. You're not getting any strength advantages, well minus chromo shafts, out of a straight axle D44 vs. the TTB version.

I am thinking about doing a lift kit of the 4 inch flavor. What all do I need to get?

Due to the geometry of a TTB, it's going to wear tires quicker than a straight axle. They work OK for the most part though, and are cheap (I got one for free)

Glovemeister, there was a guy in Corvallis parting a 85 F350 crew cab that had a 4" Rough Country kit on it; guy said he'd take $300 for everything; front leaf springs, drop brackets, drop pitman arm, blocks for the rear, U-bolts, etc. His contact info is at Enviofuel.com

I'd go for a kit with extended arms if I had to do it all over again. I got my Rancho 4" kit used for $150 and it included the ttb drop brackets, radius arm drop brackets, coils, full leaf spring packs, two junk front shocks, and most of the hardware. I'm not even done with my front end build and I'm ready rip out the radius drop brackets to make some extended radius arms for my setup. So the cycle continues...

Can I purchase and or have them made with the Rough Country kit?
