Ok guys, i'm attempting to replace my front passenger side U-joint and i've hit a wall. I think I've taken the hub apart as much as i can, but it's not coming off. does anyone know of a good diagram that can show me what needs to come off, what to loosen, or so forth? I found one post explaining how to take it off on here, but it's very vague, and I'm not sure what i'm missing... HELP!!! Any input you guys can give me is greatly appreciated!
If you have the hub with the rotor off then you are trying to get the spindle off. Sound correct?
There are 5 bolts to take off. Then they make a tool to pull that spindle off. I do not have that tool so I used an air chisel behind the seating surface. But be forewarned that it did damage the sheet metal dust shield that is in there too.
You want to be careful what ever you use to not scratch or score the bearing seating surface or threads.
Maybe make a slide hammer tool that can pull it off.
Thread the nut back on and see if you can use that to pull on.
Then again I may not be talking about the "hub" that you are talking about, please let me know.
OK sorry.
You need to get the spindle nut off.
I assume this is a 4X4.
You probably have the hub cover off and some of the locking hub parts come off with that.
Next you need to get the spindle nut off. Look in there with a good flashlight. See if you have a "C" shaped clip. If so get a o-ring pick or small screwdriver and pull that c clip out starting at the narrow end. it will swing forward or rearward (or upward or downward) depending which side it is on. Then get hold of the thicker end and pull it straight out toward you.
You will then see a round nut with alot of holes in it all the way around. Small holes. You will need to spin this nut out using the small holes to turn it. Try not to tear up the holes. I have used a small long screwdriver and tap on it lightly to get the nut spinning. I have also used a test light that has the sharp point on it. Anything that is pretty strong and small will work.
This is the nut you are removing:
I really don't know how far you are in this process. Did you get the whole hub out? If so go with my directions.
If not remove the snap ring in there and you will see wher my directions pick up at.
Pics and/or more info would help. What do you have off laying in front of you?
You will need a socket from there . It is a lock nut , spacer, & another nut behind it . you can do it with a screw driver in a pinch , but it is easier with the socket..
okay, so i just got off the phone with a mechanic and then i realized that the u-joint area is too big to slide through the spindle hole, so he tells me i need to break the ball joints and take the whole damn thing off. you guys ever have this problem?
is your front end a strait axel or ifs cause on my ifs once the spindle came off you could pull the the shaft and u joint through was about 7 years ago I will look in my book

When the hub & rotor are off , the spindle needs to be removed like Neal said ...
You stiil have to remove the spinndle its got like 5 or 6 nuts around it then you have to be carefull not to scracth the berring surface while you work it off
