Hey guys, I finally, with help from a good friend, got the 85 with the 300 running. Mostly...
Aside from the power anything issue (brakes, steering, so on and so forth) the only major issue that we've discovered is that when it gets warm, it wants to stall after a little bit. The other weird thing is the battery was completely dead when I went to go rescue him. Had to push start it 5 times to get it home...
Alternator maybe?
Woops, forgot to meantion another little oddity... When the key is in any position besides run, the computer makes a clicking noise, much like a clock ticking... Dunno if that has ANYTHING to do with it.
My truck (86 F150 4x4 302 EFI) was stalling quite a bit and one day I noticed that when it stalled there was alot of clicking. My clicking was from the fuel shutoff relay. But the computer was the real fault, making the relay go crazy. I have siince changed the computer and she runs like a champ for 6 months now. Not sure if this applies to you, but there it is.....
A quick trip to the local auto parts store will tell you if the alternator is the issue. They can throw the tester on it and see if it is the problem. If not, a computer swap may be in order. Being that it's an 86, do you still have the feedback carb or have you converted it to a DSII?
If not, plenty of guys including me have the old computer from after we converted to the DSII. That would be another cheap test.
A while back, mine would die after a 20 minute drive. Ended up being the alternator.
Yes, still has the feedback carb, but parts of it dont seem to work. One of the connectors was completely melted when I got the truck. No I havent converted to DSII yet, though it's in the future plans... Especialy when I get away from this craptastic town where Wyotech students are looked upon as troublemakers not worth dealing with. (all the j/y around here charge 3 to 4 times what the parts are worth if they think you are a "Tekker")
Is there a way to bypass the computer's control of the fuel relay? IE run it directly off an ignition switched wire? I'm sure there must be with the removal of the computer after a DSII swap.
I'm planning on getting out there here pretty soon with my friend and pour over the wiring harness with wire brushes and heat shrink tubing... There are bits of wire where the insulation is completely gone, like a yellow wire going to the dizzy that's laying against the frame... Hope that's not needed lol.
I'm not sure about bypassing the computer to the fuel relay. I know I had the feedback on my 86 and that was the first thing I converted, I have never regretted it. The distributor was $60 and the wiring harness and DSII box was $80 at the junkyard. The carb I purchased off of Ebay for $160 and she was converted in a weekend with the help of the guys here.
If you have stripped and bare wires lying against the frame, you are going to be running into lots of issues. Clean them all up and then see what you've got. The melted connector could be a problem too.
I had a 1984 f150 302 that had a problem when it got warmed up, it bucked, farted, belched, and stalled out, had to restart often. I had the choke and carb adjusted, but still had the problem. it turned out to be the ignition module.( a 4"x5" aluminum box with fins with two plugs) the tec said it was firing more than once every time? causing back firing and when it heated up would just quit? you can see these boxes cheap on line( ebay) to try it out. runs like a top now!, vic
