Seems to be about 60 degrees over ambient temp. However I also have a TruCool supplemental cooler. The stock system might be around 80 degrees over ambient.

Are you talking the stock trans temp gauge or an aftermarket one? 60-80 over ambient is what I consider "normal" too, especially when empty.

You will most likely not see it move (depending on location). Mine will run at 130* on the freeway all day long with a 6.0 Trans cooler. When I tow I see 160-180*.

ok that makes me feel a little better about it because it wont always register but when it does it might hop up to 150* all the way to 170* just driving around town, i.e. i was driving approx 30 mins today and next thing i knew the gauge was reading 170* and wasnt reading anything a few minutes before so im not sure if its reading accurately. however, ive made 9 hr road trips before and the needle would never move. thinking i might have to change it soon and find one that starts to register at 100* to make sure its working. what do yall think? and i live in louisiana so temp shouldnt keep my temps that low (i wouldnt think anyway, could be wrong)

I would change it, Temp gauges are cheap to buy.

In the winter time around here, I hardly ever see any temps over 140 degrees. I'd swap it out to a 100-250 degree sweep and be covered.
