I have a 2002 XLT 4dr that came with the dual media (cass&CD) radio rated at 80 watts. I recently bought the AudioPhile 6 disc IN dash CD radio that is rated at 290 watts in Ford's literature. All functions work on this radio, but the volume is not as strong as the dual media unless it is turned up quite a bit. There is a third plug on rear of this radio, and I did not notice a matching wire in the dash. I am thinking that this radio needs an external amp or amplified speakers to get the rating it has. This is optional in XLT models, so I am a bit surprised it would not be set up to plug in. Hoping to hear from someone who knows about these radios and what I am missing. Thanks.
I'm getting a Eb 2003 tomorrow with the same radio but it also has a rear sub. I think the rating of 290 has alot to do with the sub. Subs are power hungry and I highly doubt the stock radio really puts out 290watts. I had a 60 watt amp that was 30watts rms per channel and that think kicked a$$!!!! You might be better keeping the stock radio and getting a powered sub. that will enable you to take some bass out of your door speakers making them play louder and more clear. Sorry i don't have a direct answer for your question but i hope I was at least a bit of help.
