I have a '96 F-250 with the factory am/fm radio still installed. I am upgrading to an indash cd player and wondered if there was a way to get the old rdio out without taking the dash all apart.
There should be holes in the corners of the factory radio you can take a wire coat hanger and place in each hole it should come right out if not make sure the coat hanger has pushed the clamps open if you need to you can open glovebox press side of it over to drop the box down reach inside and push the radio a little
If your 96 has the late model radio, like the one in my 92, you'll require special tools to remove them. I've not done it but once you have the tools the removal looks like a snap. Just insert the tools into the holes in the faceplate. Press them in to release the radio retaining clips and pull out the radio. You would probably have to go to a dealer or a radio shop to get the tools.

Try Wal-Mart, for about $3 you can get the Ford Factory Radio Removal Tool. You get two metal "U"'s, one for each side. Push them in till they click, then push the clips to the outside and pull. The radio will slide right out.
I bought the radio removal tool (after trying unsuccessfully to use coat hanger wires) but it still would not work. I'm thinking, "Great, gotta take apart the dash to get this thing out."
But after reading this post, I realized I had to push the removal tools towards the outside to release the radio. It still required quite a bit of force, but the radio finally popped out with no damage.
