I know you want a kit RRranch, but you can save a lot of money doing it yourself and there's not much to it. Wish I was closer to you, I'd love to give you an extra pair of hands. I've got about 400 bucks in mine, that is so much better than 1200+. You really won't be able to work it very hard without one with stage ones and chip. Kits are nice for sure but I just couldn't see spending that much.
Totally agree with Darin, why to expend a lot more money, when you can get a good used IC and you can fab your pipes for less than 400, or get ones from Banks if you like to expend more money.
RR if you can piece this together it shouldnt be to bad. Here i found this guy over on psn smokin-69@msn.com , he will build and ship you ic pipes for our obs trucks right to you ur door for $200. so no modifiying them or anything then all you need is a 6.0 cooler and spyder. so just email him with what u wanna do and he'll set u up.
You might want to investigate what the installation process is for these different IC options. I have the old style brass radiator like you do. I bought a Banks spider and a Ford 6.0L IC and built my pipes. In addition to the normal process of coming up with a good IC mounting scheme, I had to do a fair amount of clearance work on the core support, radiator side flanges, and fan shroud. That is not kit bolt in type work. I didn't like having to cut into my radiator flanges. Just warning you what you might be in for before you get started down the path. Check the port to port spacing of the different IC's and compare that to your radiator width. That said, the IC kicks *** and I can flog my rig towing at pretty much full power with no EGT trouble most of the time as long as I hit the bottom running.
The right turbo will help, not hurt, your egt's. I'm still bolting my parts on, so I can't speak from personal experiance (yet), but I'm pretty much copying Caryt aka OBSWIZ's set-up. He says he tows heavy with no issues. The only thing that slows him down are the road conditions and the police. But these upgrades do get expensive!
If you want to knock the price down a little more, you could gather what you need to build your own set-up. Or better yet, keep an eye on the classifieds on the truck forums and buy someones old setup when they upgrade.
I agree with the turbo comment. The right tunes paired with the right turbo will help out your EGTS big time. I rarely have to worry about the egts once I get mine spooled. However, there's no mountains in Iowa but there are some pretty good steep jags around.
I think the safest thing to do then would be the intercooler and HPOP first and save my pennies for the new stage 1's. That would be ok wouldn't it?
My wants to go up to Iowa this year. I'm sure glad I carry 140 gallons of fuel. Last time I was up there was in my Mustang and not a single gas station opened on Sunday. How backwards is that?
That would be fine RR but it wouldn't be long before you want the stage 1's. Like a few others, I fabed my intercooler for about $350 but I just wanted to add that your stock turbo is just fine. It will pull its guts out with the stock turbo. My bearing was going is why I got the D66 and in all honestly I don't see much of a improvement. IC really helped but my coolingmist water/meth injection knocked 200 to 250 degrees right off the top. I would make a run with the 16K 5er with it on, turn around and do it again with it off and it makes that much difference.
I just rebuilt my turbo recently. It's getting about 18-20psi with my worn out pump and 200k injectors so I'm sure it will be fine. I was going to look into water injection too.
Dan, I would just get the SD IC and pipes and build your own setup.. It's $1000 cheaper. That savings is a new set of stage 1's.
I seem to remember awhile back you were talking about never chipping your truck again or something.. Are you going to tune this truck with the stage 1's?
Here's the deal, with stage 1's and no chip, your truck will run as if it's dead stock. It will not inject any more fuel than it did with stock 98cc squirters. So, if you run stage 1's and no programming, you will not see high EGTs at all, therefore, no need for the IC. I would do the injectors and run it on stock tuning when pulling your 5er until you get the IC. Once you get the IC, run the tow tune..
I used to see plenty hot EGTs with my stage 1's towing, but I'm going to say that was due to boost leaks.
I just put a DP tuner in my friends truck and was convinced that it's worth it. Her mileage went from 14 to 18. Power was nearly doubled. I think her old banks chip must have been corrupted somehow. I know I need one. I just have to decide on the tunes. I have a new stock 97 with a stick shift PCM I'm putting into today and will get one of the DP chips asap. All I'm after is mileage reliability for the most part. Not getting run over by big trucks is nice in the mountains too.
I called all the junkyards here today about intercoolers. I don't think that will happen. They want too much money. WAY too much. I have to figure this out. I might just get a new one if it's gonna be this much trouble. I found a couple kits online that were from someone upgrading but the pics made me a little leary.
I think it was the ATS kit that I saw on an OBS truck in San Antonio.. It looked absolutely stupid IMO and was tiny compared to my SD IC. I think the Banks or the Hypermax would probably be best. How about looking on Craigslist for parting out SDs???
Keep checking ebay and the classifieds, something will come up. As far as the trucks running you over, its the other way around. When I hit the bottom of a mountain grade full blast and there are trucks ahead, I always hope for the opportunity to go around them. If stuck behind them you will be down to a crawl whether you like it or not because if the chance to pass comes alone you will not be able to get up enough speed to pass. I find that most loaded trucks will go about 23-28mph on a 6% grade and if everything is working on my truck I can usually hold 43-48mph.
