Efi or carb?

I have a 302 roller cam motor that's had some work done to it, I want to put it in a truck, I'm looking at buying an 89 f150 4x4 with a bad motor. Would it be easier to hook my motor to the efi setup or keep the 4 Berrel holley and remove the efi system from the truck?

What work has been done to it? I say go efi but '89 is speed density so it may not be compatible with the camshaft in the engine.

I was told it came out of an 80s model mustang, and it had a 351s camshaft. I don't know that much more about it except what I can see from the outside. What should I look for that would help me know if it'll work with the efi?

Mainly just the camshaft specs. If it is a stock cam then I'd imagine it would run fine but don't quote me on that. Also the 351 cam will have a different firing order than the original 302 in the '89 but it'll work fine on SD. I'm currently running the 351 firing order cam in my 302 SD truck.

Thanks for your advice, I have not bought the truck yet. I'm looking for a truck to put this engine in, I have it from an old project that fell threw years ago. Hate to see the motor just sit around and I could use a full size work truck. Any recommendations on a truck that may be an easier or better fit for this engine?

A MAF (mass air flow) truck would be a great option those came along in the f150's around '94 I believe. Maf is much more adaptable than SD and camshaft specs no longer are an issue although a cam grind more suited to low end torque would obviously be a much better choice for a work truck

Transmission

What the transmission in the 89 f150, is the automatic transmission effected by the engine being changed to a carberated engine?

Ahh yes I forgot about that. If the 89 has an electronic trans (i.e. e40d) then it would be much easier to keep the efi computer for the trans. But if it is non electronic (aod) it wouldnt matter

Is there a simple way for me to check that when I go look at it tomorrow?

Yes there are a few ways one is if there is a button for the od it is an electronic trans. I read 89 was the first year for the e40d. I hope for you it is a non electronic aod. That's what I have in my truck and it has taken a lot of abuse (many burnouts lol) without issue

Ok so if it's the 3 speed with out an OD... Thanks for your help, I may need to go for an older truck for my ride, but I sure do like the body style of the 89. Ha I have a transmission bolted to my engine, it may be a c6 but I will need to do some research to figure that out. It would be great if I could throw my engine and transmission right into the truck.

No problem, glad to help. I also love the 8th gens (87-91). Make sure to post pics of the 89 if you get it.
