My gpr was working sometimes, but looks like it has quit all together. When i turn the switch on i get voltage to the gpr, but the relay doesn't entergize;I think i read where the computer grounds the relay,is this right and can i check this with an ohm meter to see if it is going to ground. 1995 f350 cc 5sp with 249000 miles, dont know if the relay has ever been changed out.
Thanks JIM
With a test light or voltmeter you should see voltage at all four connections when the GPR is working. If you're getting voltage at only one of the big connectors, then the PCM isn't calling for the GPs for some reason. If you get voltage at one large connection and both small ones, you have a bad GPR and it is not sending voltage to the GPs.
And yes, many on here swear by the Stancor relay, but I got one at Napa in a pinch the other day as well. Ask for a GPR 109. It runs about $32 around here. The layout of the terminals was a bit different and required some re-routing of the wires to make it reach correctly, but it works great so far.
You are correct, PCM pulls one of the small wires to ground. When you know the GPR should be energized one of the small wires will have 12 volts and the other small wire will be close to ground. When you know the GPR should be OFF then both small wires should be at 12 volts. You can also check the coil resistance on the GPR with both small wires disconnected and make sure it is not an open coil issue.
Thanks guys, looks like i might have an open coil.12 volts at one small terminal but no voltage on the other side and voltage on one large terminal and none on the other. Will do more checking tomorrow and let you know. Thanks Jim
