I have a 97 7.3 just rebuilt the top end and replaced 2 injectors , the truck is smoking badly when the pedal is pushed couldnt read any codes when the computer was plugged in , the alternator wasnt putting out enough . Replaced the alternator and when the truck was a idle still isnt putting out until the truck hits 2k rpms and then fine . I still havent put it on the computer yet but a buddy said it sound like it could be the pcm that is the culprit of the smoking and the alternator . The smoke is staight diesel if wondering any advice please .
So, you're saying that your engine is freshly rebuilt. It's smoking profusely out of the exhaust, and the alternator output is insufficient. You believe that these two issues are related, but you need more assistance in diagnosing the problem(s).
Is the truck up to operating temps when you are doing this? If NOT then these could both be symptoms of the same issue, namely that the engine isn't warmed up yet. Any diesel will smoke a little when you punch it while it is cold. Also the low alternator (or charging system voltage) condition could be because the Glow Plugs are still running because the engine is not warm yet. These glow plug systems can run for 2-3 minutes at a time, even if the engine is running. Mine will show a low voltage on the gauge on the dash until it starts to warm up and then you can see the needle "twitch" slightly as the voltage regulator in the alternator is cycling until the batteries start to recover to a 12V charge (my batteries need to be replaced.).
Any time you have an injector out it's gonna smoke like a steam engine out the pipe till all the air is purged out of the hydraulics and the cylinders are clean again. That part is probably normal. It takes at least an hour of hard high rpm flooring it constantly to clear it up. I recommend just driving it normal though. It will go away by the end of the day. Fix the alternator first though.
If your alternator isn't putting out then you probably have a wire on wrong somewhere. How many volts are you getting? 13-13.7 is about normal when it's charging. If it's less than that then maybe your glow plugs are staying on. Put a test light on both big terminals of your glow plug relay. One should always be hot and the other should be hot for 30 sec to 2 minutes after you start it. More than that and you got the ground wire to your pcm shorted to ground probably or hooked up wrong.
As for the alternator I know that a bad alternator want cause a truck to smoke , the ? is if the pcm could control something w/t the alternator issue and that if the pcm could control something w/t the injector causing the injector to dump to much fuel in that cylinder . The cylinders that were causing trouble had two new injectors replaced and didnt fix the problem , pulled two old injectors that were good and put in the cylinders that were causing trouble to see if the one of the new ones were bad same thing . Found problems w/t the valves on the two cylinders that were causing trouble so did a complete rebuild on the heads and valves . O and also put a new fuel driver also . I havent checked to see if the glow pugs were affecting the alternator but will check when I get home .
forgot I always been told that it will smoke pretty bad until the all the oil lines are purged and the air is gone since the engine has been drained completly but I put mabe 20 or so mile and nothing changed , some say 50 or more but im getting a little afraid of washing a cylinder if i drive much more .
The injectors are new , I finally figured out the pcm is not the issue w/t the new alternator turns out the old alternator was the only culprit in using the computer. Since I was able to use the computer now it is now reading that all the injectors are bad which not possible knowing there are two new and before the engine was pulled that all where reading working fine . I think there is a computer module issue but don't know where to begin , I do know that a new fuel driver module was installed right before the engine was pulled , what other electrical parts could it be that is causing a fuel prob or am I looking at the wrong things ?
How did you determine you had 2 bad injectors? Where did you get the two "new" ones at? Are they reman's?
Why did you replace the injectors? We need to know the history.
I would think small and then work towards larger items. How do the valve cover harnesses look? ICP? IPR? Make sure all of these electrical connections are good.
