Well, this weekend the Bronco decided to give me my Valentine's in advance, so the steering box decided to explode internally (just assuming), it basically started to leak steering fluid down the linkage from the pitman arm and the steering box (i already watched very closely, the leak is coming exactly from that spot). Well, that is the issue, now, what can be done? i'll surely have to take down the box, how is it done? any recommendations? comments?.
If its just leaking fluid (and there isn't lots of slop and such), you can get a rebuild kit. My brother removed and rebuilt his in a weekend for about $80. I think he said the most difficult part was getting the pitman arm off.
The rebuild kit contains lots of seals for the fluids.
If its full of slop, you'll most likely just need to get a replacement, since that deals with worn internal gears and such.
Sector shaft seal failure is not uncommon. I had one on my 92 that did it perpetually and I replaced the seals twice. (I honestly think the shaft had some wear that made the seals too thin to seal properly anymore). Unfortunately, I never got to deal with that issue any further before she was burned.
UPDATE: Since money is tight ATM i decided to purchase a rebuild Kit, it actually came real cheap at about $11, it also had one of the funniest disclaimers i have ever read: "NOT ALL PARTS ARE OF U.S.A. ORIGIN"... well... i guess i'll have to try my luck with this one, i hope i don't have too much trouble taking the box down. Will be trying to do the whole thing tomorrow.
I think i will need an extrator to take the (!%"#%"#$%"/) Pitman arm from the sector shaft... Any extractor will do?. Damn... everything was so easy until i reached that point, now i'll have to stop until i buy an extractor .
Wow... most of those things go for $200 on the net (US), but here in Venezuela i found a simpler model being sold at around $26 (found out i also need a 3/4 socket, $5). I will try to buy one tomorrow... Darn, i wanted to finish this job today... now i'm not even sure if i will be able to finish it this weekend (public transportation near my home sucks... and everything is way too far...).
Ok... the universal extractor that i was using wasn't very good, so i went and returned it, bought myself a pitman arm extractor ($13.77). It seems very robust this one, still, i'll try to use a clamp on it so the arms don't spread. I'll wait an hour or so and will go fight with that darned thing again.
