I was changing my primary fuel filter today and I noticed it didn't look exactly like I had remembered it just a few moments ago when I reviewed it in the 2003 6.0L Bible.
Here is a side by side of my HFCM and the image from the bible. It looks like mine doesn't have the item marked as 'Fuel Heater'.
My truck is a 2003 & I've never had a problem with cold weather.
I looked and didn't find a harness looking for a home.
Any ideas? Do I have a different HFCM?
Thanks.
Looks like the pump and harness might have been replaced at some point. The heater was done away with on the later models and possibly the harness was replaced too. Are you the original owner?
That's because your HFCM and harness have been replaced at some point in time. Ford deleted the fuel heater on these trucks beginning in the 2006 model year for a couple of reasons. It was speculated that the heat of compression was sufficient for heating up the fuel entering the combustion chamber, not to mention the chemical reaction to the element in close proximity to the water separator. This would eventually lead to other issues, and thus it was deleted on the newer trucks.
Could you elaborate on the "other issues"? Some that you have seen or are aware of?
Just curious.
Don't mean to hi-jack.
If the fuel heater were to short out, it would blow a fuse and shut down the PCM, just to name one of them. Fuel heater shorts were most common on 7.3L trucks.
