Gear ratio question

On the way home from buying my 96 I got 16.1 MPG running between 65-70 MPH. I noticed that the tack seems to read about 200 RPM higher than my 91 7.3 IDI. Running those speeds my 91 gets 18 MPG. (I've gotten as good as 20 out of that truck a couple of times as long as I stayed below 65 MPH)

Both trucks are F250 Super Cabs with 7.3 Diesels. The 91 is a 2 wheel drive auto, the 96 is a 5 speed manual 4X4.

The 91 has 4.10 gears. I'm curious if there is a way to figure out what gear ratio the 96 has without pulling the differential cover and counting teeth, and if there is a difference in the final ratio between the 2 transmissions.

There is a difference between the two gear ratios on the trannies.. I am sure someone with more knowledge about the 5 speed will step in and give it!

As for the differential gears.. You should have a tag on the housing where the cover plate bolts on. It should be under one of the bolts. It will give you the code to the gears you should have in there, as well as what type of carrier unit it has.

The overdrive ratio on the automatic is 0.71:1. The manual trans overdrive ratio is 0.72:1.

If it's a stock gear set, just look in your drivers side door jam and get the 'axle code' off the sticker, then come back and match it up with this list (don't worry about the 'year' column, those are good for our trucks also)

Can also determine if you have open diff or ls

Sorry this is way off topic for the OP's question... (I answered your gear ratio question in my post above though )

It's nothing fancy, just lets you lock the TC at will, instead of right before the OD shift. It's nice because my NAW6 pcm has a horrible shift strategy and doesn't lock the TC untill right before the OD shift, where as the TDE0 (and TDE1? is that the most recent) locks the TC earlier, and feels like another gear. This lets me lock my TC on back roads at 35mph (3.55 gears), so i'll be in 3rd gear, locked TC to keep the RPM's down... just need to remember to shut if off when you stop or the truck will stall, and you really shouldn't use it at low speeds/low rpm (low line pressure)

The switch is located in cab, 1 side runs to ground and the other to the purple wire w/ yellow tracer in the wire bundle on the drivers side frame rail. DO NOT cut the wire, just splice into it or the PCM will not control TC lockup

use with caution though, this mod is known to destroy TC's and trans if not used properly...

SORRY TEAMROPE FOR

Thanks for the help guys!

Code 35.... Looks like the 96 is also running 4.10's and an open diff. Funny thing, The wife and I also have his & hers Mercury Marauders. We swapped the factory 3.55's for 4.10's in both cars.

ZF 5 overdrive ratios should be either .76 or .77 depending on exactly which gear set it has.
The E4OD overdrive ratio is .71.
.72 is the ZF 6 overdrive ratio.

That works out to about 160 RPM difference at 65 MPH between the ZF 5 and the E4OD.
