aod is toast

Got the bad news 2day. The AOD came out of a florida highway patrol crown vic. I put it in with new seals and filter and then bought a TCI valvebody and was thinking it was good to go. WRONG Its TOAST.No high gear. So i called Summit and i will have a TCI Streetfighter AOD rebuild kit for it 2mor. You can't beat summit on shipping time. Guy said he would have it rebuilt by monday . 600 IN LABOR [ouch] but i can leave the house without worrying. Better price on labor here than it would be at billy bob's gas/tow/and stripclub 20 miles east of rt.66. LOL That would be a bad.

No the FHP gave it to the body guy for parts and we just thought it was good. It had been hit in the rear.

I'm retired law enforcement and our transmissions never lasted long. I know of numerous trannys that needed replacing at 20-30k miles

I feel very fortunate to have a local Over the Hill Gang member who is retired after running a very successful transmission shop for over 35 years. He charges us local guys $300 in labor and gives us the parts at his cost. I just had an AOD built with 4R70W internals, he made all the necessary mods to make this work and it only cost me $660. I mention this not to poke anyone in the eye but to make the point that there are probably a few retired guys in the neighborhood that would love to help out a fellow gearhead...the trick is to find them.

I called three different shops in Boise for my rebuild and the best offer I got was $900. Monster transmissions will ship one to my door with a new torque converter and three year unlimited mileage warranty for $1200. I believe I'll go with the warranty.

Sorry to hear about the trans but, like you, I have nothing but good to say about Summit Racing.

Those guys are great to work with and do a lot to keep their customers happy. I will continue to praise them and buy from them whenever I have a need for go fast parts.

I will be looking soon to get my C-4 freshened and buttoned up so it won't leak any more. With some slight motor mods I want to be sure the trans won't grenade the first time I mash the loud pedal.

Fred, does the AOD have a cable or linkage for the throttle position? That is the weak point on AOD's, any misadjustment will fry the OD bands/servo quickly.

Yes, the AOD has a TV (Throttle Valve) cable. You can get the correct linkage from a number of different places including Summit. And as ALBUQ F-1 said, it has to be adjusted correctly or your tranny is toast. I would definitely have a tranny shop do the actual adjustment of the TV cable. (One that is familiar with Ford's AOD. This is critical with this tranny.)
And Summit kicks a**. I'm lucky enough to work across the street from one of the main warehouses/show rooms here in Reno. They have a killer scratch and dent section I browse through twice a week.
I plan on rebuilding my AOD this summer. Getting my parts from Ford-AOD.com the ultimate AOD Transmission Perfromance Website This will be my first automatic tranny build. I've heard the performance servo and hardened shaft are a must in the AOD.

Here you go. This will get you started in the right section! More good videos on the list to the right! I've rebuilt two automatics and one manual transmission. I'm sticking my AOD in without a rebuild, but I have no idea if it will need one soon or not.
