2003 Ranger clutch question

My buddy is out of commission for probably the next 4-6 months anyway so I am servicing and maintaining his truck for him. 2003 3.0L 5 speed edge. The clutch doesn't feel like it is engaging all the way. There isn't very much resistance in the pedal and is kinda difficult to get into gear. When you let the pedal out it catches at the very bottom after the slightest release of the pedal. It's the factory unit with 108K on it. He said he feels like there is a leak in the system. Have any of you experienced the same thing? I plan to check the slave bleeder to see if it is tight and to bleed it in case there is air. What would be the symptoms of a bad clutch or throwout?

check all the bushings and linkage for wear or missing, check the fire wall for cracks. at 108,000 miles it is probably nearing the end of it's life if it is a city driven truck and not a lot of highway miles

I would bleed the system, and see if the operation improves. A clutch that starts to grab early in the pedal travel is in good shape because it has a lot of friction material left, or the linkage is mis-adjusted[not possible here] or there is air in the system, and the pedal is not extending the slave cylinder enough to dis-engage the clutch.
So, first thing, easiest anyway, is to bleed the system. Other than that, you may have a problem with the slave cylinder. The resistance of the pedal is not the same as you would find on a mechanical linkage, or on an old Mustang HO for example, so the effort required doesn't tell anything.

If that is the original clutch, save yourself a lot of trouble & replace it & the hydraulics.

Slave cylinders are notorious for leaking. Check for leaks, then bleed.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna bleed the system and check all the linkage and go from there. I'm just maintaining it. I'll be glad to put a new clutch in for him but I won't be buying it thats for sure. Gotta save $$ for the PSD.
