Hella Grille

Like many on here, I am not impressed with the headlights on my '07. I upgraded bulbs to the Phillips Extreme, but the high beams are still weak (lows too, really). I have had some issues with installing an HID kit on our '94 Bronco, and while the authorities don't seems to care about "illegal" lighting upgrades locally, we travel to places where an HID conversion of the stock headlights might attract the wrong type of attention. So I installed the Hella replacement grille with the built-in driving lights - the HID version. Awesome lighting now, let me tell you! The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is that Hella doesn't include an on/off switch, so the driving lights are on whenever the high beams are. I would like the option of not having them on (although I don't know why), but that's an easy fix. The really great part about this is that Amazon has the kit for $413! The halogen version is $425. No one else that I could find is even remotely close to this price. The 4000 series HID driving lights alone sell for $473 on Amazon. I'd post pics, but for some reason I can't upload any new pics to my gallery. But I love the look and so does my wife (she encouraged me to get the kit after seeing a photo of it installed). I do get some strange looks from other F150 drivers when they see the grille, it does stand out a little. Photos soon I hope.

Depending on where you go that is considered illegal lighting. Here in VA if your highbeams are on all other driving lights such as the ones you have or fog lights must turn off with the switch to highbeam. The way to take care of this is to wire the lights directly into your other fog lights if you have them then they should turn off with the switch to highbeams.

I have considered upgrading to this grille myself but not because of the power of the headlights. i find those to be good enough. No I want these because the fog lights seem to low on the front bumper to be effective.

Wow, I find the stockers to be quite enough light, high and low.

We have some large animals who find that the roads make it easy to move around when there's deep snow on the ground. I don't believe one can have enough light around here. I must admit that I thought the stock lights were better when the truck was new. I'm wondering if I have a wiring problem somewhere that is causing a drop in power to the headlights? Maybe my headlight switch is getting tired? I have a spare relay kicking around, maybe I'll bypass the factory low beam wiring and run straight to the battery and see if that helps. I'm putting HIDs in the fog lights tomorrow to help out the lows. You couldn't possibly use these for low beams, I dim them the second I see any on-comming light, but we saw some great wildlife on the way home the other night. Three owls (2 in flight), mice all over the place running across the roads (explains the owls) and a snowshoe hare. Thankfully nothing larger.

While there are only a few times that I feel I need something more than the highbeams (usually during hunting season on the country roads) I have to say that the Hella Grille looks too Mustang like. I'm just not a fan of the driving lights up in the grille.

Have you thought about a light bar, like the products from N-Fab?

Or if you wanted some "protection" their prerunner bar:

Most of the grille guards and bull bars I have seen require the removal of the tow hooks. I use my tow hooks too much to lose them. Plus the driving lights are at the correct height for light distribution. I love the looks, but to each his own.

I like the bull bars or light bars best, but I agree that I would hate to lose my tow hooks. That's mostly what has stopped me from installing thus far.

The products from N-Fab don't appear to use the tow hook locations. So you wouldn't loose the hooks. See their pictures.
From what I gather the brackets install through the gap in the bumper beneath the grille.
