Spark Plug Issue

I have had my 71 F100 for 4 months now. I drive it daily. Two days ago, I was having some issues accelerating. I checked everything out and the plug in my #1 cylinder (it is a 240) was fouled and it looked as if some oil had sprayed out around the spark plug. The plug was tightened down. This is the second time this has happened though. It happened once about 2 months ago. Just wondering what could be causing the problem? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Meaning what? Why does the plug keep loosening or why is oil coming out around the plug? Sounds like two problems.

The plug was tight. I was wondering why it fouled and where the oil came from.

OK. It either has to come from the rings leaking or bad valve seals/guides.

You can do a visual inspection of the valves; remove the valve cover and the valve springs on the cylinder in question and see if they are loose in their guides; the valve seals are very easy to replace at this point but if they are loose in the guides then replacing the seals is only a temporary fix.

The rings and valve seats can be tested by doing a compression or leak down test.

There are some simpler clues; if it gives a puff of smoke when it's first started then it's a sign that oil is leaking past the valve seals but if it doesn't start smoking until it's running/warmed up and under acceleration then it's a sign the rings are bad.

The first thing I would do is take a compression check and go from there.

Make shure your valve covers arnt leaking down onto your plugs. I had the same problem. Oil settles around the plug and as the engine heats and cools it wicks the oil down threw the threads and fowls out the cylendar. I did valve cover gaskets and added those little bars that spread the load from the bolt over a greater surface to reduce gasket failure. No leaks and no fouling problems. At least from oil!!
