hey, im about ready to replace all my stock exhaust. my truck is an 86' f250 HD 4x4 with a 351w. im not sure if long tube or shorty headers would be best also not sure of what diameter to go with. ill prolly go with a flowmaster muffler, dunno though. whats a good setup? its kinda my second daily driver so i want it to be good and not super loud. any suggestions/ links/ or pictures, i would really appriciate!
From what I've read, the shorties do little for perfomance on the 351w, so longtubes are the way to go. I've also heard a lot of bashing on flomasters, I just ordered a couple 2.25" cherry bomb turbos (cheap and hopefully effective)
I have a set of stock exhaust manifolds with flowmaster 40s on mine. 85 351W extended cab with long bed. Its a single in from the Y pipe and it splits out the back of the muffler into duals which run the 2.5in pipe all the way back to out from the back bumper. Looks great and sounds great in my book. Cost me $250 at my local muffler shop. It sounds great outside the truck without it being to loud inside to where it gets annoying. I personnally prefer the flowmasters to cherry bombs but like I said thats just my preference.
The problem you will find with longtube kits is you have a 4WD, to clear the transfer case and transmission, they will have to hang really low. Anything bigger that 2.25 duals is a waste on a stock motor. Also routing them is fun with 4WD if you have dual tanks, they really ned to cutover and both go down the right side to clear everything. I'm still trying to draw mine up, but Hooker makes a kit that goes down the right. I plan on running regular turbo mufflers when I do mine after I put the 351 in, never have been a fan of chambered mufflers, especially slowmasters, they make more sound than they do power.
so since mine is 4x4, i should go with shorty headers? also, im going to build a new motor once i get back from my 2nd deployment, with that said should i go with like a 2 1/2 inch pipe?
You would really need to do a lot to the heads and intake to really make use of 2.5 full duals. I'm doing moderate headwork, valve job and opening the exhaust ports up and will only be using 2.25.
Most people will tell you that shorties are not worth it, but anything is better than stock exhaust logs. Long tubes are better for making more torque. Shorties mainly help with breathing. I'm getting shorties regardless.
Okay I just ordered these L&L longtube headers and I have a 92 f-250 4x4, and Im thinking im going to have the same problem with the transfercase.... any ideas?
Hooker makes a true dual that's 2 1/4 pipe, but some don't like because both pipes exit behind the passenger side rear tire. It looks like stock 460/351 exhaust.
