couple of months ago i swaped in a 302 from a 77 f150 into my 86 f150 300inline 6. the 302 has served me well buts its really starting to tap on the the top end and is starting to smoke, i cant complain my buddy gave me the 302 but i was wondering since i switched to the ds2 for the 302 will the same ds2 module work with a 351 of the same era,or will i need one for a 351?
I may be wrong but, I don't think the DSII cares what motor it's hooked to. It's just an ignition module, the dizzy decides when to fire.
Yep, that's true. In fact, a 351W, and I stress WINDSOR, should be a very simple swap from the 302. But, you said the 302 is from a '77 and back then the 351's were M's - if the 351 was even available then. The W came out in the pickups in '82 but were in the vans at least as early as '81.
The difference between the M and the W is night and day. They are in a completely different engine line and, among other things, have a different bolt pattern for the bell housing so won't even bolt to the same tranny. Different intakes and exhausts, different valve covers, different everything. In fact, I've heard that the only parts that interchange are the valve cover bolts, but the Windsor uses 5 of them and the M uses 8.
351M was 77-81/82
351W was 82+
This is only for pickups. The 351W actually existed first, and could be found in cars from 68 to somewhere in the 90's.
As Gary pointed out, the only thing these 2 engines share is the displacement. 351W would be almost a bolt in swap for a 302, while the 351M would require more mods than going from the 300 to the 302 did.
But, as pointed out, the DS2 module doesn't care what engine it's attached to, be it a 4cyl, 6cyl, or V8. It just does as it's told by the distributor.
