I've got a line on an unused hitch from an Excursion being parted out, but I'll need to remove the shear bolts. What's the easiest way to do that? Could I just grind the tops off the heads, or is there more to it than that?
Small world! I'm the guy with the hitch. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow and let you know what it might take to remove it. It's been a while since I looked at it. And of course it is sitting in the snow right now...
Glad to see you are a fellow FTE'er. and from reading your signature, I definitely want to check out your EX!

LOL!! I'd look at my own (worn) hitch, but it was removed and reinstalled before I bought the rig, so it's just bolted on. I'm thinking a minute with an air chisel should do the trick, but I
ve not actually seen the shear bolts/rivets they use.
Yeah, great thread. In fact, I have an 18mm bolt kit sitting here waiting, and it's what prompted me to look for a hitch, instead of continuting to use the one I've welded on.
I emailed Mark earlier: turns out ford used one bolt on each side that has no hex on the head. From under the truck it looks like a rivet. And you can't get to the top easily because of the fuel tank. But since I now have the tank removed from this chassis, I can get to the nut on top.
Neil, this should be easy, then. Are you planning to sell the frame? If so, we'll need to get the shear bolts out completely. If no, a few seconds with an air chisel should have the hitch off.
Yes I'd like to sell the frame. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. But we should be able to get that last bolt off easily without hurting the frame.
i know this is an older thread but is it my understanding that to get the shear bolts out without cutting, you do have to drop the tank to do so? also when the tank is dropped how did you undo the bolt? i good set of channel locks or did you u just grind the head off?
The tank was already out of Neal's frame, so we just ground the bolts off. I guess you could try gripped the shear bolt head with something and just unscrewing it. It might work if there wasn't much rust.

gotcha... yeah he wanted us to take it off to spray it with line-x but if its gonna be that much trouble im really not worried about it. Thanks for the info!
Also side note... with as much blue lock tight that they put on the others im sure they put the same on that one, that would have to be one heck of a clamp lol to grip on to unscrew it lol
