It looks like My brother or I need to by a code reader that will work on his 7.3 Powerstroke, my cheepo one won't work on it and I'm told many cheepo ones won't work well with these.
Any recomendations, what do you have? would you recomend it? etc?
The next logical thought is to kill 2 birds with one stone and get a tuner with code reader functions. Any recomendations there? Do the tuners do a poor job with codes and other info, or a better job cause they have a live constant hookup and display?
Money is tight but if well spent we can work it out.
AE can run the various tests that are required to diagnose your truck. Code readers and tuners only read codes which will help, but may not solve the the problem. AE can pull live data from all the sensors and really helps when troubleshooting. The testing varies depending on what vehicle you use it on. Your PS often requires the injector buzz test as well as cylinder contribution. There are many others that can be run. It also has the ability to change the speedometer for larger tires. Really it is the best deal out there. I have had mine for several years and it is really nice to have.

AE like Ken mentioned is king, everything you need for a (complete) diagnosis. A Superchips handheld tuner is another option for yaa. Their code reading ability is worth more in my opinion than HP numbers, although the modest power gains and shifting stratagies worked for me at the time. Buying a used one can be had here and there, look around..
I wish these turkeys would get their act together. This fits in a gauge hole, displays any engine parameters PCM monitors AND does diagnostic tests like Buzz Test, etc. Aeroforce Technology Inc | Products - Interceptor
