Question Speedometer needle removal

I want swap the busted speedo head (includes odo) on the '55 from another '55 unit that works.

But the assembly includes the mph panel behind the needle, and there's surface rust blooming on it.

If I could get the speedo needle off, I could swap the nice clean mph panel on there from the nonworking unit.

Does the needle pull straight off?
Or turn 90 degrees some direction, then come off?

The shop manual does not cover this kinda detail!

THe needle pulls straight off, but do it Gently! I take a pair of needle nose pliers and slide it under the center and put slight pressure on it. You can twist them, but watch the center shaft to make sure you're not twisting that. They usually come right off for me when I rebuild the 53-55 speedos.

The speedo needle does pull straight off but be very careful.
The back of the pointer has a small hollow shaft that presses over the end of the spinning magnet & shaft. If you are not used to working with parts this delicate find a jeweler or watch repair shop that can pull the pointer, they have a tool that looks like a minerature gear puller that won't hurt the speedo guts.
Good luck!

I have a spare panel if you need it. I believe it's in decent condition but will look tomorrow to be sure. If you can't fix yours or want to look at the spare let me know. BTW, Napa on 200 ordered the starter for freddie, but supplier said the y would have to have the factory make it.. 3-4 days....maybe not in time for cruise in thursday. Cost $79 vs. $139 from our friend in concord.

Will advise on condition of my panel

Thanks all!

Now I guess I'll chech with that guy I shave with in the morning to see if he thinks he's smooth enough to do the operation

Actually, that hint of carrying it to a jewler sounds smart..............

I used to do a lot of miniature metal work and, if you choose to do it yourself, the single biggest thing ya gotta do is get some GOOD quality stereo magnifiers. Unless you have the shakes bad, you'd be surprised how good a job you can do with high quality magnification. Oh yeah, and a lot of good, white light on your project. Come to think of it, a good, complete set of miniature tools like dentist or jewelers tools is a must too.

Hmmm ... sounds like maybe it would be a good idea to check at a watch shop after all. Or maybe your dentist!
