First time - installing rockers, guide plates, push rods.

I will be installing a set of rebuilt and ported D3VE heads on my 75 460 in the next couple weeks. As I am keeping the stock cam, I am going to install pedestal mount rocker arms.

A few questions:
1) Are these a suitable rocker arms for my application?
Comp Cams 1232-16 Comp Cams High Energy Rocker Arms

2) I have never installed rocker arms; but, I have been told to apply some sort of lubricant on them to prevent bending/breaking push rods?? What type of product do I use for this and how/where is it applied?

3) Push rod/guide plates - what size...3/8 or 5/16? Do I need to measure the length of the push rods that are needed after the heads are installed? I would rather order these so I have them when the heads are ready to be picked up at the shop. I assume I would get the guide plates in the size that match the push rod diameter? Would the raised guide plates be OK for my application?

4) When purchasing a set of rocker arms and guide plates, do they come with the necessary bolts or hardware needed to install them?

5) What other key points do I need to be aware of when installing these parts?

As always, thanks for any helpful information.

#1 Yes
#2 Any place like Summit or Jeggs will have assembly paste that you need. Some local auto parts stores might have it. I always use Isky Rev Lube that I get from Speedway Motors.
#3 You can't use guide plates on your heads. You have the stock nonadjustable rockers. The rockers fulcrum keeps the alignment. To do it right you will have to measure for pushrod length and add lifter preload. You have to have the heads on to check for push rod length.
#4 Like said, you don't have a adjustable valve train, so no guide plates.

Thank you for the information. I was not aware that guide plates were not used with stock rockers. (and this is why I ask questions...lot's of 'em!)

What is the best method to measure the correct length of the push rods that I will need? What does you mean by "add lifter preload"?

Thanks.
Chris

After you find the push rod length for your motor, you add the preload figure to it .020-.060. I always use .020 for a hydro cam.
You will need a adjustable push rod to find your length and a 12" set of dial calipers to measure it. Set it at the stock length to get started. You want to get the length that sweeps the valve tip evenly across the tip, starting in a little high on the tip and ending up a little low on the tip as it sweeps across it.

Is this a suitable adjustable push rod for my application?

And, will I need any other parts for securing the rocker arms to the heads or do they come with the rocker arm sets?
