guide plate question

have been searching around and cant really find what i need, so...

i have a set of C5 289 heads that are in need of guide plates. They will be used with hydraulic flat tappet lifters / cam and the stock NON rail rockers with the stock locking nuts.

do i need to have the pedestals milled the thickness of the guide plates?
can i just add guide plate thickness to the push rod length?
do i need to drill the slots or can they be left alone?
do screw in studs need to be used with guide plates?

i know i need hardened push rods.

Thanks, Rob

The heads have the factory pressed-in studs now? If so you will indeed need to have them pulled, the pedestals milled, and then drilled/tapped for screw-in studs. It won't affect pushrod length - that's a matter of how much the head/block have been milled.

k...
yes - press in studs
no - no milling on either

i was really hoping the hyd lifters would take up the slack from the guide plates, but i kind of figured they needed to be milled the thickness of the guide plates.

i know i need a solid lifter and the push rod tool to check length, would you happen to have a link for the proper procedure to check push rod length?

Guide plates would bind the pushrods and the rockers would walk if they weren't securely bolted under the studs. There's no easy way to get around it other than using rail rockers. The cam you're using is right at the edge of too much lift for rails, maybe with some roller tipped ones you'd be okay. Otherwise you're stuck for ~$300 worth of machine work + parts.
