i looked into doing this upgrade and also seen the LMC's upgraded wiring harness's basically the same setup as the diagram made up on the first page of this thread? or are they different if so what's the difference between the 2 and which is better?
The LMC harness takes all the fun out of piecing your own harness together.

other than that good reason is there any difference between the 2 or are they basically the same wiring route? is 1 better then the other? besides the cheap lmc relays. i'll probably go with making my own but just want to know alittle more about the differences of them

Looks like a good schematic.
What's really nice about the LMC harness is it's plug and play, no splicing or anything.
I was chatting with someone via PM about this but figured I would put it out in this post.
I have been running the Hella 72 207: 003 427-291 in my 1979 for years now, in fact I've had them so long that I need to replace them as the metallic color reflective backing in the lamp itself is fading or going away.
Below is a link to the lamps I've been using for 10 years or so, I've been running them with the factory wiring has this been a problem? I have on occasion had the lights start flickering on me which has always happened while towing at one point I ended up replacing the headlamp switch and it went away. This has happened during a summer month a year or 2 ago while sitting in a traffic jam while pulling my 18ft car trailer again with lights as well. Once I got going down the highway and had airflow the lights never flickered again.
I'll forever remember that trip because it was to rescue my Father when my Lightning he was driving from out of state decided to have it's idler pulley lockup and tossed the belt.
I need to replace my lamps which at a minimum I intend to do with the Hella's mentioned above (link below) (I think I bought them from Jegs years ago), but will adding the relays fix the "ghost" issue I've had surface every now and then with the headlamp switch?
the relays will take the load off the head lamp switch and lo- hi switches, a must with the larger draw. I also relayed my running lamps because of the trailer lamps.
Does anyone have the p/n for the bosch relays? My local Napa needs p/n to reference- Wish they just had them out so I can grab the ones I need!!
**Update** for all those looking for the NAPA p/n for this relay it is AR703 or ECH AR703- it shows up in the system as an A/C, Air Control Valve, Blower Motor, or Fog Lamp Relay-**
**Bosch p/n 0332014150**

Reason: Found the p/n

AR272 is a start... Or find a better parts store.
They should gave a book showing all available relays, some with nice mounting holes etc.
Thanks Bullitt - I'll go back tomorrow and ask them if they have a catalogue- I checked the prices on the p/n I posted and they are about $13 a piece- there has to be less expensive ones that are of good quality-

I made my schematic by looking at the LMC harness, so ultimately they are the same. Only if done yourself, it's more customizable. (wire gauge, routing, ect.) I'm a DIY'er so I'm going that route, but the LMC harness is a simple plug and play.

You probably won't find the relays for much less than $8 a piece.
That's why the kit works so well, $29 plus shipping. But I wouldn't order just the kit anyways, just add it in with a bunch of other stuff that was going to be shipped anyways.
Otherwise to duplicate the LMC kit:
2 relays
2 headlight sockets
1 female headlight socket
Wiring
Ring terminals for ground
Even buying the LMC kit and substituting your own relays you're still way ahead of the game. I truly do not feel the relays that come with the kit are all that bad. I never had issues in my 74 and no issues so far in my 87 Ranger.
What I find funny are the guys that complain the most about them are also the ones that:
A) Never drive their truck because it's still in pieces or...
B) Don't drive at night anyways, so what does it matter or...
C) Barely drive 1000 miles a year so durability is a non-issue
Sure someone can chime in saying they installed the kit and had bad relays. I have messed with hundreds of Bosch and Tyco relays in heavy equipment and OTR trucks and have had dozens failed from the package. So what, it happens.
I checked fleabay and found some nice looking conversion headlights for our trucks that upgrade you to replaceable H4 bulbs and some even have projector like centers that I think are bs. Going to get me some and do this mod as soon as I can. Going to end up with a bank of relays after this mod (2 relays), daylighters on the bumper (2 relays), electric fans (2 realys), and driving lights for reverse lights (2 more relays). Yes a 3G alt is in the works too.

2 relays for headlights are for low and high beam.
No need for 2 relays for foglights or 2 for back-up lights.
I like for each light to have it's own relay to lessen the strain on the relays. And my fog lights are going to be daylighters. The reverse lights are going to be driving lights with a manual engagement switch for rear lighting. Also, thanks for reminding me that the headlights will be 4 relays. Yes I realize its overkill.

Hmmm... You do realize you can have 5 100 watt headlights to each 40 amp relay? Watts/ volts= amps
I am looking at doing the 3g alt upgrade and then this one. I am still learning and not great with diagrams. Does anyone have pics of this upgrade in progress or completed?
