It's actually pretty accurate; it learns the average over a period and will calculate based on that. On a trip to Phoenix, I started off with a range of 450ish miles because of winter/4x4 use, as I got a few tanks through it in 2wd it went up to 600+. Coming back, the reverse happened as I started hitting headwinds and 4x4...

This is the only part of my overheard display that does not work correctly. It may work at first, and then all of a sudden it says "40 miles to empty" (and displays to warn you), even though I've got > 1/2 tank. I hit the button 3 times to bring back up MPG display. Within a few miles it will happen again. It may be bad connections between the chips and circuit board. Maybe your problem is similar to mine--maybe we need to re-solder the chips onto the board as discussed by many on this site.

I don't know if yours is broke but mines pretty accurate from .1 - .2 of a gallon, each time you fill up it recalculates and if you idle a lot it will change the reading and winter fuel gets worse mileage. But mines real close when you figure it with the gas pump, sometimes changes up to 150 miles depending on the mileage you've recently driven, previous full tank.

My "guess" is, based on personal experience and observations of the guage system, is that there's more than one sensor in the tank. My mechanical guage is always working and highly accurate, but the one that feeds for the digital readout display can sometimes do nothing if I let it stay low for a while. I found once, but putting a half a tank in, then hitting the brakes hard a few times and sloshing the gas around in the tank, brought it back to life within a minute or two. I think they are just fickle and tend to stick for some reason.

You can hold both buttons down for a few seconds to reset and get realtime MPG readings for a while til it averages.

keep in mind that the MPG meter reads off injector pulse, but the DTE reads off fuel level sender unit, which can be affected by lots of things. If the truck was not level when you last filled, or when parked, if the sender is sticking, if the baromeric pressure changes suddenly. There is a section in the owners manual on this subject.

According to the Manual....it shows an average of the last 500 miles driven, or since reset. So if you were idling a lot last fill up or 4x4 etc, it is likely to show 350. Mine with the front hubs locked (due to vacuum leak I cant seem to trace) shows 372 about at each fill up, but it also varies between 8.7 and 9.1 miles per gallon according to meter, which is pretty close in reality.
