I have a 72 F250 W/ 428, C6 and custom Stainless dual exhaust ( Nascar style? ) with both sides exiting on the passenger side behind the axle. Standard manifolds.
1. I would like to get headers for it. Anyone know a good resource for this application?
2. When I changed the oil I was surprised to find I couldn't use the Fram filter I used on my 65 F100 with a 390. The clearance from the filter mount to the cross member was about a half inch too tight. I thought it would be the same? The engine / chassis appearance doesn't look any different from the 65 pictures I still have?
What could be the difference here?
Is it a chassis difference due to year or tonnage rating?
Also, The oil pan drain bolt is smack center of the cross member. Makes oil changes messier than they should be. Will a 390 truck application pan fit on a 428?
Can't help with the headers, but the oil filter problem is easy to fix. Get the truck oil filter mount and then instead of down the filter will be horizontal. Or you can just put a jack on the front lip of the oil pan and jack the motor up an inch or so and get the filter off. At least that always worked for me. On the oil pan I used a deep sump unit and the cross member was not an issue.
The oil pan, you can definitely swap to a truck pan, it will bolt up, just make sure you get the correct oil pickup tube.
Bear has you covered with the oil filter adapter. Is your F250 4x4, or 4x2? My '74 highboy had a vertical oil filter adapter and there was no problem with the oil filter. Are you using a PH8A filter or the longer HP filter?
Headers - what bolt pattern is on the 428 heads? Standard 8-bolt? If not, it's gonna be hard to find anything except "shorties" that MIGHT work. If it's the standard 8-bolt exhaust bolt pattern, find the correct headers for a 360/390 for your year truck and you should be good to go. Just make sure the ports match up before you get all into it

Thanks Krewat. I'll check the bolt pattern. Any input on best place to get a set if I can use them?
