Another topic had someone asking for tougher V10 questions so here's one I can't answer....
My truck, 1999 F350 with V10 has had a weird problem, twice in the year and a half I've owned it. Here it is....
On startup, both times where I've been driving and parked for just a few minutes, it starts and dies all in one swift motion. The first time was at a rest area where I used the "facility" to drain. I got back in, turned the key, did the normal startup where it fires and kicks up to about 1500 RPM's and then immediately dropped to zero, just like turning the key off. No service engine light or other related indicators.
Tried a couple times with same results. Finally turned key, stepped on gas a little to keep it going, which surprisingly worked fine... kept it revved a little and took off that way worried I was going to have trouble and never did.
Next time was after stopping to get gas. Took on about 30 gallons and went to start up, same thing. 4 tries, finally stepped on it a bit and did the same thing as above, no problems. Now it's been several months since the last time this has happened and I haven't had any problems with it. I've not experienced any problems with power or driveability.
Not exactly the same thing as yours, but my V-10 has stalled a few times also. In all my cases, mine was idling and slowly moving in reverse backing out of the driveway. Just dies. Every time it just starts right back up and there is no further problem. It was def. not a case of not enough gas pedal, just dies for no reason. More like a computer glitch or something?
Common problem on V-10. Go to "SuperDuty & HeavyDuty" forum FAQ, under engines. Look for thread titled "engine dies and won't idle" Your problem is your IAC idle air control. The faq will answer all your questions.

This is an old thread, but my dealer told me it could not be the IAC since it happens so infrequently. It just happened to me the other day for the first time in a few months. Just going slow in some traffic and the engine just turns off. No sputtering or anything, it's just like you turned the key off. I then started it right up like normal and has been fine since.
The iac will carbon up and stick, and will happen periodically.Mine has been doing it off and on for about 2 yrs, just not enough to mess with it.By the way it looks like a silver canister on the back of the intake elbow.[where the throttle body bolts up]
Yep, it sounds like the IAC. Mine would just die at or slightly above idle just like you're talking about, and I've heard the same story a bunch of times. Only very rarely, I might add. Eventually it got worse and worse until it would never idle without throttle pressure. I changed the IAC and never had another problem. Very easy, and from looking at it, I figure you could just clean up your existing one if you want to save a buck. You should be able to get it off without even breaking the gasket.
"steping on the gas to keep it running" is a classic IAC symptom.
Mine does not die like that. Idle does not stall or vary, just shuts off in a snap like you turned the key. Also, has done it since the truck was new. Reason the dealer won't do anything is that it is so infrequent. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. As it always just starts right up, I don't worry about it too much.
If it ever does get worse and is fixed by cleaning or changing the IAC, I'll post back to this thread just for informations sake.
Trust Us. It's IAC...they crap out as often as a dog on beer sausage. It's an easy swap, a couple of bolts and a plug...check my gallery. They can go completely, intermittently, sometimes or whenever they feel like it, even in the showroom. Sometimes all it takes is the engine vibration of a second start attempt...to get it to run right.

Reason: Clarity
Good idea to closely inspect all the vaccume lins while you ar in there as there is a elbow that feed a line to the throttle body that is also a weak link and deteriorates causing a leak.
Yep I agree it's the IAC. I went through two of them by the time I hit 38,000. Went to the dealer 5 times between 20K and 38K before they finally changed the first one. Second one lasted all of 3k and they replaced it while we waited. For 62K now it has been okay. Sometimes it would just die at the light, sometimes it would sputter to a halt, sometimes it wouldn't turn over.
Mine has not done it for quite a while, but that is the way this seems to go. I don't think there is any pattern of weather or traffic. It is really a very minor thing. If it gets worse than a few times a year, I will just replace the IAC and probably be done with it. I have a few problems with my V-10 that are much more frustrating to me and seem to have no solution so I will worry about those:
Poor a/c
High oil usage
Interrmitant malfunctioning of back up sensors
And of course, what all V-10 owners keep in the back of their mind and hope never happens to them..... spark plug blow out.

I have a 2001 f250 v10 and have the same symptoms that you have. I have a perfect idle, it never fluctuates but the truck has just shut off in the past year. It was always hot weather, heavy traffic and less than a 1/4 tank of gas. Was this what you experienced also?
