I went with the propane hanging unit from the ceiling. Hooked it up to a 100# bottle. keeps shop at 60* pretty good. Runs about 45 to get to 60* then runs 8-10min then kicks off 10-12 min. 75000btu in 60000btu out. Shop is 22' x 50' insulated 11 in walls and 19 in ceiling. Found it on Craig's list for a $100 in Lawrence. It was already propane ready. Bottle was a hundred used and about $65 to fill. Regulator was another $75.00, hose $25.00, thermostat $20.00. Best money spent this winter.
Was going to go wood till the insurance said they would drop me. NO wood burners in a garage period!!!! Instant policy drop. Has to do with the gas fumes. Would double check before you install one.
Good thing to know on the insurance and a wood burner. Building type, attached or detached, and insurance carrier probably all enter into the equation.
Nope, no wood burners in a garage period. They say if it can have an automobile in it it will catch fire. Propane and natural gas is ok. Has to be 18" off of floor because that is were gas fumes settle to. I checked a few not all insurance company and the reply was the same. If you know people that have them in the garage they failed to inform there insurance and this is a way out for the insurance if there is a fire. The whole thing stinks as wood is the best heat. Do like the idea of shutting off the furnace when I go inside though. No flame no fire.
Maybe I'll light a fire in the fireplace in the house and leave the door to the garage open to warm it up. That would probably pass muster with the insurance co. LOL
Yea, try explaining that to the wife when everything is gone and no money to replace it. That would be worse than a divorce. I would not even get my 1/8. lol
Knowing me I would try to install it right, and it would still burn down. The wifey is already smarter than the insurance agency, she gave me the big NO on that idea
