Is there supposed to be a grommet or rubber plug at the firewall of the engine compartment for the heater core pipes? I am talking about where the rubber hoses connect to the heater core. Mine doesn't have any sort of plug or cover, and it is somewhat loose and looks like something is missing there.
If you mean in the glovebox there is a cardboard type cover that restricts access to the heater core. If you mean under the hood then I don't believe so. It appears the core sticks out the holes into the engine bay and my hoses connect on. If you mean vaccumn lines under the glovebox then yes there is a couple grommets I noticed when I pulled my interior the other day, dash etc.
Yes there should be a foam gasket that fits over the heater core pipes. As time and heat takes its toll, it most likely fell apart. I used some RTV and inner tube rubber and made up a gasket to keep water/air leaks from occuring.
Don't use that expando foam. That stuff holds water and rots metal, found out the hard way....
If the heater core has been replaced, the foam gasket is likely laying in the bottom of the case, or got tossed with the old heater core. If it's in the bottom of the case, it's usually in many tiny pieces......
There is a U shaped foam gasket that seals the heatercore to the box.
At the firewall of my 1987 the Factory had applied some mastic tape to seal the heater core necks on the engine side.
