Question 2003 Expedition Wind Noise

I recently purchased a 2003 EB. During a recent trip to Colorado, while driving along I-70 the wind noise in the EB was so bad you couldn't carry-on a conversation. This was due to a strong North to South wind. In fact you could see the tops of the doors flex ing on the south side of the vehicle. This happened both on the way out(driver's side) and the way back shifting to the passenger side. Has anyone else encountered this type of problem? Before I talk to my dealer I'd like to have a little info from others. Thanks

2003 Expedition Wind Noise

My dad has a 2003 EB as well, and the wind noise can be pretty bad. I haven't seen any doors flexing, but I can attest to the fact that it gets loud in there, especially past 65 mph. With a strong wind outside, the situation only gets worse. I've been in several other SUV's, including BMW X, Mercedes ML, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder, etc. and the 2003 Expedition has to be one of the worst as far as wind noise is concerned. Even my F-250 is quieter.

I actually took the Expedition to the dealer and did a test drive with the mechanic riding shotgun. He said it was loud, but that's normal for this vehicle. He claims that when Ford designed the Expedition, they wind tunneled it for about 60 mph. He suggested coating the weather seals with silicone lubricant spray. It helped, but not much. I would still recommend the silocone treatment though -- it's a good thing to do on any vehicle.

If you want a truly quiet vehicle on the highway, you have to go German. I love Fords, but those darned Germans know how to make cars (and SUV's) built for the highway! I guess the Expedition just wasn't built for the Autobahn. (Off topic, but I'll never forget doing 143 mph in a rented S class Benz -- had to change my underwear, but it was worth it!).

Lightbulb 2003 Expedition Wind Noise

Hello
I also have a 2003 Expedition. I ALSO had the BAD Wind Noise.

WHat I did to fix it was to bring in the hinges on the front doors, I was able to slide a sheet of paper between the with it SHUT, after bringing in the hinges, it took ALL of the noice away and it has not come back since it at ANY speeds..

Hope that this helps
David

Do you have a site where I can go to to see about REMOVING the spped limiter on the truck, I hate having it limited at 100 miles per hour. I am Canadian, and it is on the Canadian Models, I am not sure if it is on the US version.
Talk later
David

2003 Expedition Wind Noise

I have wind noise on mine too. There was also a noticeable whistle at times on the passenger side. We assumed it was the window needing adjustment. When we took it in, the shop manager at the dealer told us it was the mirrors and that Ford was working on a retrofit for the mirrors. To check if they are the cause he told us to fold in the mirror. We did and the whistle and noise went away. So, I am waiting to find out when Ford comes out with this retrofit.

One thing you have to bear in mind is that the Expy's body shape isn't exactly "wind-cheating". The extra girth and height of this vehicle WILL generate more wind noise. On that note, the wind noise shouldn't be so loud that you can't carry on a conversation. I would recommend the silicon lubricant on the weatherstripping, and possibly a thorough treatment of Dynamat (or a similar product; Dynamat gets expensive). That should quiet things down a bit.
