I have an open 9" N 31spline axle from a 70 Fairlane under my 55 F-100.(WEC-S OFB 3.25 9 890A) I'm putting in a new engine which will give me around 500HP and I want traction. When looking around I've decided to go for the Eaton Detroit TrueTrac ( alot better roadability that a Detroit locker), but even though the part nr 913A586 should fit, I see there are a number of different types on E-bay.I especially want info on the "slim" one and the "thick" one on EBay now. Which works for my axle?? The axle is on my truck and in use now,so I really don't know anymore about it than size and age
A True Trac is one real piece of junk. I put one in a Dana 60 rear I used to have under my truck, It went less than a mile and then BANG. It made it home but the drive shaft would turn half a turn before it would catch. They took it back without any problems though. Now knowing what I do and what I've heard about them I don't think I would have liked it, cause it doesn't lock up instantly and unlocks frequently as you let the throttle off & sometimes you have to feather the throttle to get it locked up. For a 9" I've always liked the stock traction lock Ford put in them. A Detroit locker is a good choice too, their road manners aren't bad at all.
The trutrac I have in my Chevy has worked fine. Can't tell the difference from the stock limited slip in my '79 Ford 9". They claim a higher bios ratio so more power gets sent to the wheel with traction than with the stock setup and if you totally loose traction apply slight brake pressure to send torque to the wheel with traction(that would do the same with stock LS). Works sometimes, sometimes not. No doubt some have failed but 2 years of offroad with mine and all is good.
My question was not if to use a true Trac, but if there are any differences between the two True Trac on Ebay now. The one is thin and cone shaped and the other a fat cylinder. Both seem to have the same ID number.Anyone know which one to use with my axle?
I hace never reseaerched for a 9", so sorry I cant help you. Most places (even on Ebay) you can call and ask whats up! I would say contact the seller's and see if they can tell you any discernable differences between the 2.
