We have a 2002 Mountaineer with the V6 and auto. Had it since new and it has been pretty much trouble free. One thing that bugs me though is the HVAC system.
First, the fan. On speeds 1-3 it doesn't move much air and when you put it on high, it is very, very loud (but does move more air). I don't remember it always being this way. Is this something wrong with the fan motor?
Second, when driving on the highway lately, you can feel a very cold draft coming from behind the glove box. You almost have to run the heater on high to stay warm. The air blows from where the selector says it should blow (defrost, hi/low, floor) but I can't believe how much cold air is coming into the cab area. When operating the position selector switch, i can hear things working like opening and shutting. Also, the air does get heated to what I think is a normal temperature. Its not like it's blowing lukewarm air for heat. Is some valve for outside air stuck open?
no, take off the glove box door, take out the glove box... then you can see the fresh air door. It would be hard to fix, just push it forward toward the front to close it, and lock it there with a small rod or stick.....
blower output sounds about normal.. low is about nothing. 2 is normal for driving around highway. i use 3 if you want to get things warmed up faster and want more volumn of air... 4 is too noisy and way too much air flow.
Thanks for the reply Steve. I have tilted the glovebox down and I see the inlet grill. I can reach my fingers thru the grill and feel the unattached door just laying on top of the blower motor. I can move it around verifying that it's loose, but I can't pick it up. If I could just get under it, or pick it up, I would lay it against the firewall in the closed position and then use something to block it shut permanently. I just can't access it.
my door was still hanging on the hinge. On mine the cylinder bracket or cam was broken. I just took something like a popsickle stick with a notch on it, pushed it thru the grill, forced the door closed and pulled the "notch" down on the grill. If it was mine, i think i would cut the grill off, screw the door fixed into position, then glue or wire the grill or a screen back over the hole.... no one is ever going to see it !
I just finished getting it back together and it works a lot better. I ended up cutting the front of the airbox on 2 sides and folding the flap up and out of the way.
This gave me plenty of room to mess with it so I just positioned the door and screwed it shut. After I drilled clearance holes for the screws in the door I taped a dry wall screw to a long screw driver. They tap right into that soft plastic. No need to try and shoot them in with the drill motor.
All in all it was pretty easy and thanks for leading me to the problem. The fan is still noisy on setting 4 but the volume is better on setting 3 than it was. Plus, no more frigid air coming into the passengers legs.
