I got a 1990 bronco my rear window does not work from the button on the dash I can get it working with the keys but it seems like it gets jammed up and needs some help any ideas?
So it does work with the key, but not with the switch? Then its a wiring issue between the button and the motor, most likely either a connector or maybe the button itself.
What do you mean gets jammed up and needs some help?
When I try to get the window to work it will move up or down a little bit then stop i have to help pull the window up or down or give the tailgate a little tap to get it going
well, that sounds like the motor is on its last legs. I'd take the cover off so you can check to make sure everything is tight and on track before replacing anything. But its an easy and pretty cheap fix.
One thing to check, when you turn the key can you hear the motor, just no window movement? If so it may just be the little gear and those are super cheap to replace
Open the panel on the tailgate, lube all the internals with graphite grease, see if that helps with the weak window. About the switch, you'll have to check the wiring coming from the switch.
Also, grease the sides (flat, broad surfaces) of the gears inside the tailgate, since they slide along each other. Grease the horizontal channels beneath the window as well (that the leveling sliders move back and forth in).
Another issue that could be causing this is the topper isn't lined up right. If it isn't slid all the way forward before its' bolted down, it'll put a touch of torque on the window when its going up, making it difficult to go up.
Lastly, make sure the connections for the wires are good. My motor (new motor at that) was weak for a long time, and I finally tracked it down to some wires that had almost pulled out. There were only a few threads of copper left that were supplying juice. Much stronger motor after fixing that.
Everyone has given you good advice here. I will only add that as a last resort, if you clean and lube everything as suggested, take a moment to inspect the tracks that the glass itself travels in. They can get full of crud and even occasionally shift in their mountings. But as I said exhaust ALL of the options the guys have already given you before worrying about them.
Bmacky , just had similiar problems with my rear window, first of all the switch on your dash are known to go bad. Second the window lift mechanism fails and theres a simple fix (if your hear your motor running when the window trys to lift ) . Try off-road.com and look for the bronco tailgate window mechanism fix, good luck TR
