i have a 1990 f150 w/302..im planning on gettin rid of the manifolds because they are cracked n im gonna go with some shorty headers from summit..just wondering what problems i may run into and what to do with the o2 sensor..any advice will help
O2 sensor is in the downpipe, not the manifold. The worst thing that could happen is you break off a bolt. Drive the truck for awhile, and then take the bolts out while the engine is still hot. I broke one bolt when I did my headers, had to install a helicoil.
The summit shorties fit great and are made by pacesetter. Just get some GOOD exhaust gaskets, and make sure all the bolts are tight.
im not lookin for too much performance but i am wondering if the truck headers from summit are as good or better then the shortys...alot of the things i read on the long tubes is clearence issues...thanx for the input
my long tubes touched the driveshaft (front) and the starter. but it was nothing some heat, a 4' pipe and ratchet strap couldnt take care of. X2 with the good gaskets, go with some dead soft aluminium ones. also start soaking the manifold bolts 3-4 days with some pb plaster before you try to take them off. i still broke 3 when they were 3/4 of the way out. nothing a left handed drill bit couldnt take care of. i also took the wheel wells out, and tires off and went in from the sides. lot easier to drill out the broken bolts, and install the new headers. good luck
im gonna shoot em with pb blaster and get the engine hott before i try to pull them out but i do have bolt extractors and plan on doin it from the side with the tires off..so once i put the headers on i should put the o2 in the ''y'' pipe as close to the header as possible?
welllll the manifolds that r on there now are cracked real bad and the y pipe is broke rite before the cat..so with the headers im gettin a whole new exaust headers back..it will all b new so i will have to buy sum kind of kit? idk exactly what to do...i dont wanna spend alot of money but i want a lil more performance and better mpg's..
The Summit shorties are actually Pacesetter headers and are actually real quality products, I have used them on 2 of my SBF Fords with great results.......Fit well, well made,......... just don't break any bolts!
bolts break like crazy...be careful..other than that the summits are amazing headers i havent had an issue i painted mine blue with engine enamel and bought new header bolts and the expensive re usable gaskets just in case i wanted to go to longtubes
pick up a pack of arp 5/16 header bolts (16), little pricey but well worth it. there the only bolts that i could get to work for me. and dont have to worry about over torquing them if your using a little open end/box wrench.
thanx guys i appreciate all ur help..i just cant wait for it to sound good..im thinkin a single in dual out muff and dumpin em in front of the rear tire..good idea??
