I am getting ready to replace my factory V-code front leafs wiht X-codes. I think I have the correct Ford part numbers and the local dealer gave me a pretty decent price on them.
While searching for the part numbers on the internet, I noticed that several spring manufacturers have replacement leaf springs of varying capacities. Upon further research, I noticed that most manufacturers use the same part number for the replacement springs. Some even list the OEM part number that the springs replace. The manufacturers are all members of the Spring Research Institute, so I assume that there is a "standard" set for each spring.
On to my question. If there is an industry standard for springs, shouldn't there be a "generic" equivalent to the Ford X-code spring? I doubt that Ford manufacturer's the springs and there has to be a mark-up between the manufacturer, Ford, and the dealer. Not trying to take business away from our site sponsors, but if there's a cheaper alternative, I'm all for it. Anyone have any input?
My particular application is a 2002 F350 CC 4x4. Several manufacturer's use part number 43-818 as the factory X-code replacement and also offer a 43-818HD as the highest capacity leaf spring which consists of 3 leaves. Here are a couple of examples of what I have found.
You really need a little more information here. I would find it hard to believe ther is only 1 X code spring from ford. You see, I think a standard cab v8 4x4 would require a different x code spring than a crew cab diesel x code spring, simply based on the additional weight. Since you have a crew cab and I am assuming possibly a diesel, and you are seeking a stiffer spring, possibly for a little lift or maybe a plow, or maybe yours are fatigued, i would be leaning towards the hd one with the additional leaf. The truck will not know the difference between a ford spring or an aftermarket probably made by the same company that supplys to ford. All new leafs should already have bushings pre installed.
It is my understanding that the Ford X-codes have 2 leaves and ride a little rougher than V-codes. Is this correct? I imagine that springs with any higher capacity would not be good for a daily driver.
To answer your question 2002, yes my truck is a diesel and I'm pretty sure that original the V-codes are sagging. I want to go back with X-codes to get a little extra lift above stock.
I did contact Deaver to see what they offer. Their replacement for the Ford X-code is what they call an "HD" spring and he stated that I may gain 1.5 inches of lift. The next step up was the springs from their 4 inch suspension lift and are multi-leaf springs.
Yes, the X code springs are only offered with the snow plow option. I changed from the V code to the X code springs on my dually last year. The new springs raised my truck 1.5 inches. I can't feel any difference in the ride.
X- codes raised my truck very little. I put them on when I installed my plow. Very little difference in ride, but my front end doesn't sag as much now when I'm plowing.
Thanks for the info guys. I'll probably go with the springs from the dealer. I was just hoping to learn whether leaf springs are "standardized" between manufacturers or if they are company/vehicle specific and whether anyone knows of an X-code equivalent.
