So i had a friend run an idea past me the other day. I currently have a single 6" aussie stack off center where the "Y" pipe would come through the bed. Im looking to do duals. So with this being said, he threw out an idea of using square tubing as the y pipe. Cut a piece of say 2x6 square tube long enough to go across the bed. Then cap off the ends and weld a piece of 5" tube to run through the hole in bed and connect to my exhaust. Then weld two 5" pieces of pipe about 8" tall on either side where the stack will go. Then slip the stack over the 5" piece of tube. This way it wont take up a whole ton of bed space. I will sent the square tube out to be powdercoated. Just wondering if the square tube will really mess with my sound? Im going to have a tonneau cover on so i wont see any of the pipe anyways. Just dont want to lose the classic 7.3 wooshh of the turbo noise. Anyone done this before? input? I really dont want to spend the money on a kit. And i have all the materials to do this. Thanks
Sorry about the long post.
i didnt want to buy a kit either because i would end up cutting it anyway because of my toolboxes. so i ended up making a "tee" out of 4in pipe. its not really easy to see, but it gets the point across.
You already have the stuff. Try it. What's the worst you'd be it 12 inches of square with holes. You already have a hole in the bed. Try it and make a video lol. I wanna here it.
haha alrighty, im gona weld it up this week. Try it out then have it coated if im happy with it. Ill let ya guys know. Still not sure what to use, Miters or aussies...
thats another reason- the kits were too dang expensive to cut up. the pipe was kinda cheap, just took a lil research to find it at the right price. i have since found it cheaper than what i paid. but still not as much as a kit
i used a standard kit but then i mounted my tookbox b/t the stacks so i am not losing any room except in the toobox (which would just b clutter anyway!). wish i had some better overview pics but these will have to suffice for now.
I'm not too keen on the idea... Sure doesn't look like it will flow very good, but I have seen a bunch of people do it that dont want to take time with pipe and bends. I would get some 90* bends, cut them to make the Y pipe, then use some flexpipe to go from the Y pipe how ever far out your wanting and clamp on another 90* bend and then clamp on the stacks. That's me though. You can build your own Y pipe setup with pipe using bends pretty cheap also..

-cutts-
did use use flat pipe or round pipe?? toolbox setting on it??? i have 5in plumbing going in the bed and have a fule tank, so thinking it will fit between stacks but on the front going to make an 8in by 8in notch and fi=lip it and weild it back so tank wont set from cab 5 in. thought bout doing that to a box like yours as well
A square in bed pipe will not flow well at all unless its much bigger than 2x6 6x6 might flow as well as a 5 inch round with 90* bends. Think of the how the exhaust will enter the pipe. Head on collision with the top of the pipe then the same thing when it gets to both ends of the tube. Head on collision before it finally heads up the stacks. Don't do it!
