I hope someone can help me.
I have a 95 F250HD and am replacing the auto hubs with Warn manuals. In the tear out phase of the old hubs I am stuck at the last part to be removed before I can install the spindle nut kit.
In the Warn instructions the last part to be removed is called a 'wheel retainer'. It looks somewhat like a spindle nut but only has one notch in it instead of four. I have a spanner locknut wrench for the spindle nuts but it has four lugs on it and I am not sure if I should use it to remove the wheel retainer.
Can you tell me how to remove this part?
Thank and regards.
Since you won't be reusing it, you can try a long drift (punch) & a hammer - that's what I do with the 1/2-tons I've converted. I know yours is different, but check these pics.
Thanks Steve,
I put the image from the Warn instructions under the Album in my gallery. Best viewed largest size, the 'wheel retainer' that I am trying to remove is shown on the far left just before the 'wheel hub'.
Access to this part is a challenge as it is about 2" deep inside the housing so I might have trouble getting a good angle on this with a drift.
In order to remove that wheel retainer you have to use a screwdriver and hammer. Just put a nice craftsmen screwdriver in there and hammer it in the correct direction to turn it off.
Thanks for the suggestion Johnny.
I found out that there is actually a tool available for this but as it is only a one time use, I will try your suggestion tonight.
I'll report later on whether I had success.
I just completed the conversion today and I ran into the same problem you did. I came in out of the cold and got on this site and started searching. Luckily I was able to find the answer and I completed the conversion with no problems. The 4wd works great now!
Thanks to everyone for their help.
The right side wheel bearing nut was stubborn so I had to use the 2-3/4" socket to get it off. The left side screwed off by hand!
After I got past that everything went together in just a few minutes and I was out plowing through the snowdrifts last night.
All the best.
